Project Summary

OBHIZATRIK Foundation continues its mission to empower women from underprivileged communities through the Empowering Women Entrepreneurs project. This initiative supports women who lack the means to start or sustain their own income-generating activities by providing livelihood assets instead of cash loans.

Through this project, women receive essential equipment, such as sewing machines, kitchen appliances and livestock, based on their skills and interests, to help them start small businesses or strengthen their existing livelihoods. Many women are now engaged in tailoring, home-based food businesses or livestock rearing, enabling them to earn a steady income and become financially independent.

This initiative promotes women’s empowerment by helping them build sustainable sources of income, support their families, and gain confidence as active contributors to their communities.

Solution

The project has already created a meaningful impact in improving the lives of women from low-income communities. Beneficiaries are now able to generate income independently, reduce their dependency on others and contribute to their household expenses.

Future Plan

In the upcoming phase, OBHIZATRIK Foundation aims to expand the reach of this initiative and support more women entrepreneurs with necessary livelihood assets and basic business training.

To further our mission, OBHIZATRIK seeks to raise $30,000 to empower 100 women entrepreneurs in Bangladesh through a microfinance program. This initiative currently undertakes new initiatives and does not directly aim to provide small cash loans to women. We establish their income-generating sources based on their skills, enabling them to start or expand their businesses, which reduces the misuse of women's loans. Thereby fostering economic independence and community growth. The revolving fund is designed to support up to 10000 women over the next five years, ensuring sustainable development and ongoing impact. This program will directly aid in creating stronger, more resilient communities by empowering women.

 Challenges

Research by the World Bank and the International Labor Organization in 2023 indicates that 63.33% of Bangladeshi women are not engaged in income-generating work. This is often due to entrenched gender norms and values, which restrict women's mobility and limit their opportunities for education, skill-building, and employment. From 2000 to 2022, women's labor force participation increased from 26.1% to 36.3%. Various government and private initiatives have facilitated women's employment in diverse revenue-generating activities. Despite various initiatives, many women remain financially and socially disadvantaged.

 Achieving economic self-sufficiency through skilled manpower can significantly boost the country's economic growth and further women's empowerment. Evidence shows that when women have opportunities for paid work, they are likely to stay in school longer, delay early marriage and childbearing, and increase household spending on health and education. This contributes to lower poverty and enhances the capabilities of the next generation.

Solution

Through the initiative of Empowering Women Entrepreneurs: Microfinance Fund, OBHIZATRIK aims to raise $30,000 to support 100 women entrepreneurs in Bangladesh. With contributions from local donors and GlobalGiving, OBHIZATRIK has already helped 1600 women achieve economic stability from 2016 to now.

 This microfinance program will enable women to:

• Establish chicken poultry farms
• Set up duck farms
• Start goat farms
• Obtain seeds and necessary training for vegetable cultivation on their premises or other uncultivated land
• Acquire sewing machines to earn through tailoring
• Launch small businesses, such as shops or businesses on van selling clothes, vegetables, fish, and other ready-made food items.
