District Leaders HIV/AIDS Conference

By Steven Waddell | Founder and Executive Director

GlobalGiving Donor Report: District Leaders HIV/AIDS Conference

Date: January 20, 2026
Location: Kabarole District, Uganda
Organized by: PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) Uganda

Executive Summary:

The District Leaders HIV/AIDS Conference, held on January 20, 2026, in Kabarole District by PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) Uganda, was a pivotal event aimed at addressing the alarming HIV prevalence rates in the region. With Fort Portal Tourism City reporting a rate of 14.6% and Kabarole at 11.6%, significantly higher than the national average of 5.3%, the conference focused on the most vulnerable populations: adolescents and youth aged 15-29 and women aged 14-45.

Key Issues Addressed:

  • High Prevalence Rates: The conference highlighted the urgent need for targeted interventions, particularly for adolescents and young women, who are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • Stigma and Treatment Abandonment: Many individuals have abandoned their treatment due to stigma, leading to further transmission of the virus within communities.

Outreach and Awareness Initiatives:

In addition to the conference, PLANE conducted several outreach activities to combat the spread of HIV:

  • Counseling Sessions: Targeted outreach counseling sessions were held for young girls, providing them with essential information and support.
  • Media Engagement: PLANE organized three radio talk shows on Jubilee FM and Voice of Tooro, along with a television segment on Fort TV. These platforms were utilized to sensitize the community, particularly adolescents and youth, on prevention measures and the importance of treatment adherence.

Our Commitment:

PLANE remains steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS among youth and the general public. We are dedicated to implementing strategies that will reduce the spread of the disease and support those affected.

Appreciation:

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to GlobalGiving for the invaluable support and funding opportunities that have allowed us to connect with our community and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. Your contributions have made a significant impact, and we are thankful to all donors who chose to support our cause amidst countless others.

Challenges Faced:

Despite our efforts, we faced a significant challenge this quarter due to a lack of funding. Unfortunately, we were unable to conduct school visits, which are crucial for reaching adolescents and youth. This gap in funding has hindered our ability to implement vital programs and outreach initiatives.

Conclusion:

As we move forward, we urge our donors and supporters to continue standing with us in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Together, we can create a healthier future for our communities. Your ongoing support is essential to overcoming the challenges we face and ensuring that we can reach those in need.

Thank you for your commitment to our mission.
