This is an update on Alex, who we reported on in June 2014:
Life doesn't always go the way we plan. We encounter challenges and obstacles that re-direct us, but sometimes it can be a blessing in disguise, if we allow ourselves to view it that way.
Alex, now 24 years old, was forced to defer his college education for one year. As a result, he took a course on Solar Energy for 6 months and is very happy to have gained this knowledge. He is currently putting it to good use in the Village on the solar power systems. His project is to power all the clusters and staff houses in the Village for a period of 5 months. Alex feels particularly compelled to give back to the Village, since his admission changed his life for the better. This hiatus from college, although unplanned, allowed him to give back to the Village, while obtaining more experience he wouldn't otherwise have had.
Alex plans to go back to college for his last year at Machakos University College, where he will finish up his diploma in electrical engineering (power). Alex writes, "It took devotion, determination and hard work to make the decision" [about his deferrment] and "I am very grateful to the Global Giving donors, may God bless them, as I am now supported for my college education."
Alex's resilience and positive outlook, will help him go far in life. And Global Giving donors are laying the foundation that will help ensure his future.
