Udhavum Ullangal’ s main focus of activity is Education. We believe that educating underprivileged children is the surest way to help them write a new future for themselves.

A way to learn initiative helps in transforming children’s life and we have a range of initiative to aid this transformaction.  The   Poor   students have been extended the education grant to pursue their education by means of fees, uniform, note books, school bags etc. This   GIFT OF EDUCATION, we fondly mention is being carried out for the past fifteen  years benefiting 1000 Students every year throughout Tamil Nadu, total cost of the project reaching Rs.40 lacs. WE SUPPORT CHILDREN BASED ON REFERRALS, SO TO ENSURE THAT OUR AID REACHES THOSE WHO WILL MAKE BEST USE OF IT, WE INSIST THAT EACH CHILD SCORES A MINIMUM OF 60% IN THEIR EXAMS. ASSUMING THEY DO THIS, THEY WILL RECEIVE FEES AND SUPPLIES THROUGHOUT THEIR SCHOOL LIFE.

Ms. Meenakshi D/o V.Rajendran, (a physically challenged person) was timid and not mingled socially with others. Our skill training program conducted by Accenture team facilitated a welcome change in her behavior. Now she has joined in Talwalkers Gym as a part time trainer and earning Rs.10000/- per month and supporting her father.

We have conducted special classes for the college students to improve their employability skill during weekends for 5 months. They were taught about email ethics, C language, resume writing, soft skills, interview skills etc. We can witness lot of positive changes in their approach to learn new skills and improved their confidence level.

Ms.Ghowser Fathima, a student of Mentroship program since her 6th class is now studying B.A.history and undergoing IAS coaching. She is a Role model for all our students.

Ms. Seeniammal is hailing from a poor family. Her father is working as a daily laborer in a fireworks factory at Sivakasi. He finds it difficult to run the family with a meager wages.  Four years back he approached us for higher education of his daughter Ms. Seeniammal , who had completed her Board exams with average marks. She showed interest towards serving the society by joining Nursing course.  We got admission in M A C School of Nursing. With her hard work she completed 31/2 years course successfully. Now we have placed her in our Cancer Screening Project at Tirunelveli as staff nurse. She is earning Rs.8,000/- p.m. As she is from rural back ground, she could communicate with the rural women effectively about the importance of  awareness. Screening, prevention and early detection of cancer. We are proud to mention here that she is not only supporting her family financially but also serving  the society with her Role as a Staff Nurse. We expect many more  Seeniammal should come out as Role Model to give back to the society.

Ms. Aarthi is from a low income family. Her father is a laborer in a paint company. He has to work dawn to dusk in a Private Company to get wages of Rs.8000/- p.m. Due to his ill health he could attend the work regularly.  In 2010 the family approached us for supporting education of their daughter Ms. Aarthi who was studying in 9th Std. She was a bright student and completed 10th Std. with 91% and 12th with 86%. She completed her UG in Maths with 78% in 2017. Even though she was good at academics, she lacks in communication skill. She could not get job for nearly 8 months. She has prepared all the competitive exams but could not get placement. At that time a team of young volunteers from Accenture showed their interest in conducting special classes for college students. They conducted classes for the college students to improve their employability skill during weekends for 5 months. They  taught soft skills like  email ethics, C language, resume writing,  interview skills etc. Ms. Aarthi attended the classes regularly, got appointment in DELL Infotech Company in December 2017 and earning Rs.12000/- per month. Now she is an active volunteer of Udhavum Ullangal and mentoring the students.

A day long outing program was arranged for our mentorship students to  Mahabalipuram on 7th January 2018. It is a town on a strip of land between the Bay of Bengal and the Great Salt Lake, in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It’s known for its temples and monuments built by the Pallava dynasty in the 7th and 8th centuries. The seafront Shore Temple comprises 3 ornate granite shrines. Krishna’s Butter Ball is a massive boulder balanced on a small hill near the Ganesha Ratha stone temple. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  80 of our students attended and enjoyed the tour.

The students we support often have parents who are poor, overworked and not very well educated. As such, a large number of these students are unable to cope with the challenges that school life puts before them. Without proper guidance, their performance begins to falter and a steady number of them drop out of school.

Monitoring and helping students in need of attention.

Our Mentorship Program serves to reduce school dropouts by:

  • Helping students gain self-confidence and develop a positive attitude.
  • Keeping students focused on their education and personal development
  • Keeping the focus of the students in education through constant mentoring
  • Imparting value based education for the students
  • Keeping track of the students health through periodic medical camps

  • Our monthly mentorship program consists of yoga, meditation, sharing the day to day events, one to one mentoring and learning with fun and games. Our students would show cause their talents by way of art, speech, poetry and sports.

  • A team of volunteers from Accenture are conducting week end classes for our college students to enhance their employability skills, communication skills, building self -confidence so that they can come out with flying colours after graduation.

  • A proud moment for us, parents, donors and supports. How a small conversation and a casual introduction to Udhavum Ullangal made a big difference to a poor family? Here is the real story.

Mr. Ganesan, a volunteer of Udhavum Ullangal was working in SPIC, Tuticorin during 2006. Mr. Selvaraj was a             binder leading a normal life with meager salary. He has a daughter and a son. Mr. Ganesan developed a small               conversation with Mr. Selvaraj about his children’s studies. He told that his son Balasubramanian was studying               in 5th Std. in Panchayat Union School. He wanted to study in English Medium School from 6th Std. onwards                   and  he expressed his inability to put him in English Medium School. On hearing this Mr. Ganesan immediately               took the matter with Udhavum Ullangal for the support. We at Udhavum Ullangal after fulfilling all our formalities             sponsored his studies. Even though this boy was find it difficult to cope up with English Medium, with his hard                 work, he picked up well and started scoring good marks. In the year 2013 he came out flying colours in 10th                   Std. by scoring 493/500 i.e. 98.6%. He was the first student in his school to score such a high mark. He stood               first in Tuticorin District also. With the same spirit he completed 12th Std. by scoring 1169/1200 i.e. 96%. Now                 he is doing Engineering 3rd year in Tirunelveli Engineering College.

His sister Ms. Esakkiammal, who has secured 1139/1200 in 12th Std. in the year 2013 wanted to do                               Engineering. We arranged Bank loan for her studies. She has completed her studies this year and has been                   offered a placement in M/s. Aricent Technologies, Chennai. A proud moment for the parents and us at                             Udhavum Ullangal.
