Ms. Seeniammal is hailing from a poor family. Her father is working as a daily laborer in a fireworks factory at Sivakasi. He finds it difficult to run the family with a meager wages. Four years back he approached us for higher education of his daughter Ms. Seeniammal , who had completed her Board exams with average marks. She showed interest towards serving the society by joining Nursing course. We got admission in M A C School of Nursing. With her hard work she completed 31/2 years course successfully. Now we have placed her in our Cancer Screening Project at Tirunelveli as staff nurse. She is earning Rs.8,000/- p.m. As she is from rural back ground, she could communicate with the rural women effectively about the importance of awareness. Screening, prevention and early detection of cancer. We are proud to mention here that she is not only supporting her family financially but also serving the society with her Role as a Staff Nurse. We expect many more Seeniammal should come out as Role Model to give back to the society.
Ms. Aarthi is from a low income family. Her father is a laborer in a paint company. He has to work dawn to dusk in a Private Company to get wages of Rs.8000/- p.m. Due to his ill health he could attend the work regularly. In 2010 the family approached us for supporting education of their daughter Ms. Aarthi who was studying in 9th Std. She was a bright student and completed 10th Std. with 91% and 12th with 86%. She completed her UG in Maths with 78% in 2017. Even though she was good at academics, she lacks in communication skill. She could not get job for nearly 8 months. She has prepared all the competitive exams but could not get placement. At that time a team of young volunteers from Accenture showed their interest in conducting special classes for college students. They conducted classes for the college students to improve their employability skill during weekends for 5 months. They taught soft skills like email ethics, C language, resume writing, interview skills etc. Ms. Aarthi attended the classes regularly, got appointment in DELL Infotech Company in December 2017 and earning Rs.12000/- per month. Now she is an active volunteer of Udhavum Ullangal and mentoring the students.
A day long outing program was arranged for our mentorship students to Mahabalipuram on 7th January 2018. It is a town on a strip of land between the Bay of Bengal and the Great Salt Lake, in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It’s known for its temples and monuments built by the Pallava dynasty in the 7th and 8th centuries. The seafront Shore Temple comprises 3 ornate granite shrines. Krishna’s Butter Ball is a massive boulder balanced on a small hill near the Ganesha Ratha stone temple. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 80 of our students attended and enjoyed the tour.
The students we support often have parents who are poor, overworked and not very well educated. As such, a large number of these students are unable to cope with the challenges that school life puts before them. Without proper guidance, their performance begins to falter and a steady number of them drop out of school.
Monitoring and helping students in need of attention.
Our Mentorship Program serves to reduce school dropouts by:
- Helping students gain self-confidence and develop a positive attitude.
- Keeping students focused on their education and personal development
- Keeping the focus of the students in education through constant mentoring
- Imparting value based education for the students
- Keeping track of the students health through periodic medical camps
