Becoming Stronger and Resilient

By MARY ANN GABINO | Senior VP

As our project in Culebra is advancing in its planning, design and community participation stages, we’ve had the support of the non-profit sector of this municipal island with a population of 1,800 individuals and host of thousands in their vacation travels. The president of the Board of Directors of Fundación Culebra is very happy with the progress of the Resiliency and Economic Development for Culebra Project, implemented by Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico. The project will provide renewable energy infrastructure to 100% of Culebra’s business and non-profit sector, and distributed solar energy generation and storage system facilitating uninterrupted essential services to Culebra's social and economic ecosystem.

“This initiative will allow us to become stronger to face natural events and emergencies. We are excited to know that businesses, gas stations and supermarkets will have solar energy to continue their operations. If everything is working relative normally, it helps the community to be calm in the aftermath of a disaster”, said the president of the Board of Fundación Culebra. “For a small island as Culebra, this becomes a huge benefit because, due to our municipal island status, we are overlooked and authorities tend to assist the people in the big island. We are totally isolated. With solar energy, we can continue operating after a disaster. We will not be panic.”, added.

The inclusion of the non-profit sector in the project is essential. In the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and María, it was this sector that uplifted the well-being of the Culebrenses. They provided emergency relief – water, food, health services – but they’ve also been instrumental in building back better with a sustainable long-term vision.

“In a place like Culebra where we have sun all year round, I still think it’s unbelievable, that we don’t use it to generate energy. This is a perfect place to implement this project and become an example of what is possible, while we become the first island in the Americas to have a renewable energy infrastructure”, said.

The project started at 2019 with planning and matching grants efforts. By 2020, the work concentrated in contracting of staff, legal, compliance and engineers for the design. During this year, Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico celebrated community outreaches and individual and collective structure predesigns. Also, requested to Puerto Rico Energy Bureau the certification of Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico Servicios Inc., as an electric power company.

The project is funded by  Economic Development Administration (EDA), GlobalGiving, Prudential and other private donors. Be a part of the transformation of Culebra and continue to support this project.
