Challenge

The Esilalei Ward (five rural villages), is a significant component of the Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem because it allows for the free movement of wildlife between two of Africa's most important wildlife refuges, while also home to several communities living in extreme poverty. Today, only two of the wildlife corridors are remaining form the original nine corridors.

Solution

Sustainable conservation of Africa's diverse ecosystems and wildlife cannot be achieved without securing the well-being of local communities. In turn, wildlife and habitat offer opportunities to sustainably enhance the livelihoods of communities whose survival is inextricably linked to African wildlife and wild lands. The purpose of this Africa Bridge project is to provide a sustainable pathway to prosperity for communities and environments.

Long-Term Impact

Expected Outcomes Increased incomes for families of vulnerable children, resulting in improved nutrition, shelter, and access to healthcare and education. Empowered women participating in the economy and community leadership. Adoption of a culture of savings and entrepreneurship. Reduced conflict with and poaching of wildlife as community proactively protects and promotes their agricultural and environmental assets. A community that is responsibility for wildlife conservation.
