Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will register at least 4,000 events this spring engaging roughly 50,000 volunteers to clean land and watershed areas, illegal dump sites, plant community gardens, shrubs and trees, and provide educational information to residents regarding the adverse effects that litter has on their health, their property values and their safety.
Pennsylvania has a litter problem. Litter impacts quality of life, the natural environment and economic development in communities across the state. There is over 500 million pieces of litter found on Pennslvania's roadways. Rain and wind contribute to litter in storm drains which in turn sends litter to streams, rivers, watersheds and ultimately the ocean. Litter and illegal dumpsites give way to health hazards, devalues property, and undermines economic development in communities.
We are proud to have provided over $1.45 million in community grants since 2021. These funds have supported a variety of stewardship efforts, including community revitalization, cleanups, fodd waste diversion projects, river sweeps, community gardens, graffiti abatement and vibrant murals. We are deeply committed to involving youth in community stewardship. By empowering youth, we aim to directly influence behaviors and attitudes inspiring a significant reduction in litter and sense of ownership
Behavior change is the long-term impact along with a stronger sense of community ownership, pride in community development and leadership/stewardship skills.
