Empowering Women of Nepal (EWN) and 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking (3Sisters) locally based in Pokhara, Nepal was established in the year 1994, it is specialized in creating disadvantaged women of Nepal to become a trekking guide and is focusing on creating women guides to become an entrepreneur.
As the COVID – 19 pandemic hit globally, Nepal too was affected and was much more seen in the tourism sector. As our organization focuses on women empowerment, for over 2 decades now we have had more than 400 women guides. Although after 2 years of a severe pandemic, Nepal is back to normal and tourism seem to take time to revive. Since then many of our women guides have become jobless. This long-gone pandemic situation pushed EWN women guides to take and enhance skills on technical training.
In November 2021, EWN in collaboration with 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking, Kathmandu Environment Education Program (KEEP) organized the Wilderness First Aid Training for the trekking guides, so that trekking guides can develop skills of first aid for trekking injuries and emergencies. The training includes topics appropriate for in-field treatment related to mountain safety and makes them able to handle any kind of sickness and emergencies during the trek. The training was participated by the 23 guides and staff of the organization. Mana Kunwar, one of the trekking guides said, “Due to pandemic we were not able to go for trekking for last two years and have forgotten most of the skills, now after training it helped us to revive those first aid skills.”
Twice a year, Empowering Women of Nepal organizes the ‘Female Trekking Guide Training’ for the underprivileged women of Nepal free of cost. After the training, the trainees get the on-the-job training from 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking and get a chance to earn as well and be financially independent in their life. At present, we are organizing a month long trekking guide training from November 28 to December 24 and 14 women from 6 district of Nepal have joined the training.
After the training, Empowering Women of Nepal is supporting women financially in their initial period to establish themselves as an entrepreneur in their specialized training area.
