An end in sight for the EFA transition

By Rebecca Schendel | Chair, EFA Transition Committee

There is no doubt that it has been an extremely challenging year in northern Cameroon. The dire security situation in northern Nigeria has started to seep over the border, impacting life in many Cameroonian communities.  As the security situation worsens, NGOs are fleeing the Extreme North, and funding for projects across the region is drying up. But somehow, throughout all of the stress and the challenges, EFA's staff have maintained their amazingly positive attitudes and their dedication to maintain EFA's important work.

Over the past few months, ownership of EFA's activities has been gradually transferred from the EFA International board to the EFA staff in Maroua. Our local Country Director is now being supported by a vibrant local board, made up of community leaders, businessmen/women and public health representatives who have proven to be friends of EFA over the years. Under the new (local) leadership, EFA plans to maintain its support for our ten associations, helping the newer associations achieve their full legal status and set up income-generation projects - and supporting the older associations to continue their peer education and community sensitization work.

It is, in many ways, daunting to consider the challenges that the EFA staff and our youth associations are facing in the current climate, but it is also exciting to see them taking the reigns and making decisions without the active partication of the EFA International board.

Over the next few months, the final piece of the transition will be taking place, which is the transition away from EFA International collecting donations on behalf of the team in Maroua. As part of this process, we will be closing this particular project on Global Giving, effective this month. We will maintain our other project, and all existing recurring donations will be automatically transferred to that account.

We are proud of the progress that we've made so far this year. The majority of our success must be credited to the resilience of our colleagues in Cameroon. However, your support for EFA throughout this transition year has also been invaluable. Thank you for everything you have done to support the team, both financially and psychologically, throughout this vital and challenging year!
