This project empowers over 2,350 children aged 4 to 15 in 28 rural public schools in southern Honduras to become peer mentors-guiding their classmates in student leadership, children's rights, peace culture, life skills, and environmental stewardship. Through hands-on leadership training, nutrition and health services, improved school infrastructure, and pedagogical strengthening, these young mentors will foster safe, supportive learning environments.
Southern Honduras faces an education crisis. 40% of children have no access to school and only 30% attend preschool, leaving deep learning gaps. COVID-19 wiped out ten years of progress: 81% of students now score below math standards and 61% below reading benchmarks. With 35% of youth considering emigration, inclusive, high-quality education is essential to close these gaps, rebuild hope, and create opportunity in their communities.
Upgrading infrastructure in 28 rural public schools across southern Honduras will guarantee every child's access, while fully stocked classrooms-with books, school supplies, and teaching materials-will accelerate learning. Health programs, school gardens, nutritious snacks, and anti-bullying initiatives will safeguard student well-being. Leadership training, peace-building activities, and a strong sense of belonging will empower students to invest in and transform their own communities.
Reaching 2,350 children in 28 rural Honduran public schools, this project removes barriers excluding 40% of students and prompting 35% toward emigration. Improved classrooms and early-learning will close COVID-19 learning gaps and cut dropouts. Health and nutrition services-snacks, gardens, and anti-bullying-and leadership workshops will sustain youth, build peer mentors, and strengthen community. In five years, 10,000+ families will feel renewed hope.
