WHEN MOTHERS THRIVE, CHILDREN THRIVE

WHEN MOTHERS THRIVE, CHILDREN THRIVE
WHEN MOTHERS THRIVE, CHILDREN THRIVE

In the process of fundraising for 10 young mothers in Elowai Village, we continued providing training and support to help them improve their parenting skills and the wellbeing of their children. To ensure that young mothers are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to care for themselves and their children, we conducted a positive parental care training session, facilitated by a professional social welfare officer from Monduli District. The session covered child rights, quality parenting, nutrition, immunization, child protection and the importance of being actively involved in children’s growth and development.

The session allowed the young mothers to openly discuss their experiences and learn practical ways to communicate with their children, identify signs of abuse and neglect, provide healthy nutrition and create safe and caring homes. The session also included real-life experiences from the community, related to the risks of parental neglect, poor feeding practices and harmful cultural practices(female genital mutilation). These stories made the discussions more meaningful, allowing the mothers to reflect on situations that can affect children’s health and safety. They also encouraged young mothers to think about how they can make informed choices and play a more active role in giving their children a safe and hopeful future.

The training also brought forward an important reality:  a mother’s ability to care for her children is closely connected to her own economic wellbeing. Many of the young mothers need opportunities to establish income-generating activities that can help them improve their household income and meet their children’s needs. However, before starting such activities, they need practical entrepreneurship, financial management, and business skills to help them plan, manage and sustain their small businesses.

For Msichana Imara Foundation, this is why continued support matters. When a young mother gains knowledge, skills, and an opportunity to earn an income, the benefits can reach beyond one individual, they can improve the wellbeing of her children and contribute to a more stable family and child education. With continued support from partners and donors, the project can continue providing these young mothers with the skills and opportunities they need to move toward greater confidence, resilience and economic independence.
