EmpowerHer! Afterschool Initiative for 250 Girls in Kibera's Urban Slums," is crucial because it empowers marginalized girls in Kibera by providing them with essential skills, education, and support, ultimately breaking the cycle of poverty and inequality in their community through targeted, holistic interventions.
Forty three percent of girls In Kibera do not attend school. In Kibera girls encounter obstacles to quality education due to poverty, cultural norms, and socio-economic factors, resulting in low literacy levels. These challenges, compounded by psychological distress from poverty and violence, contribute to deep-rooted gender disparities, perpetuating cycles of poverty and marginalization. Adolescent girls face reproductive health risks, including early pregnancies and limited healthcare access.
EmpowerHer! identifies girls at risk of ending their education early and enhances their school attendance and academic performance through educational support and literacy-focused workshops. It also prioritizes psychological well-being by creating a supportive environment to cope with challenges like poverty and violence. The Fellows receive an additional 14 hours of classroom instruction per week, incorporating supplemental art, literacy, technology, sports and reproductive health sessions.
This holistic approach will empower 200 young women in Kibra by enhancing their education, psychological well-being, and reproductive health awareness. This empowerment not only benefits individuals with increased employment opportunities and socio-economic status but also fosters resilience and breaks cycles of vulnerability. By challenging gender disparities and promoting equity, it contributes to long-term societal transformation and community development.
