Empower 100 Tanzanian Youth through Education

By Robert Lyaruu | Acting Managing Director

It’s always a joy to connect with you; thank you for sparing your precious time to celebrate our achievement in the past eight months.

Apprenticeship Program;

We resumed the office in January by hosting Class 2022A and B from apprenticeship, and in early March, we had three classes at once, i.e., Class 2022A, 2022B and 2023A. This was an exciting opportunity for students to share their experiences and feedback for the partner companies and learn new skills to empower them in the challenges they face during the apprenticeship. During the two weeks at the centre, Jobortunity became a fun learning and safe space for youth.

The class 2022B returned to Jobortunity in preparation for their graduation ceremony, which will take place on September 15, 2023.

Success story: Four Jobortunity graduates enjoy working and being apprentices at Wayo Africa Tour Company in Arusha. We are proud to see such enthusiastic youth put their energy and Hi5 training into building their careers. We wish them the best of luck.

New Classes 2023A & 2023B

Last week of January, we welcomed the newest members of the youth program training, i.e., Class 2023A; we were able to recruit 33 (19 female and 14 male).

A class of 2023B were enrolled in the program at the end of June; we recruited 33 students (16 female and 18 male).

Computer Classes:

Class 2023B began their 2-week basic training on computer applications (MS Word, Excel, Internet, email, and social media applications) to develop their careers. This was an enjoyable experience for the students, as this was the first time for some to dive further into the workings of a computer system. The aim is for students to have a basic grasp of mainstream computer applications and apply them to their digital assignments as well as when they eventually get employed.

Other Skills Delivered:

The new class of 2023B was introduced to the lesson on professional grooming, and as a lesson experience, a fashion show was conducted to showcase the different types of attire to be worn at specific times and situations. Both the staff and students participated in this, which was not only educational but fun for the students.

Introduction of Entrepreneurship Skills

In this quarter, we partnered with Somo Africa to see how we can take advantage of social entrepreneurship and business skills in supporting our youth. Our first session involved the 2023B class. Three of our trainers attended their training of trainers; in August Neema Omari and Maboni Nick began imparting the entrepreneurship skills that they acquired in a 2-week session they attended at Somo Africa. Two  Somo representatives (Dennis Maanga and Josephine Msangi) visited the class and taught them about the Digikua and Digisomo platforms, which are effective online teaching tools for registering businesses, products, and services using custom Somo templates.

Graduation Ceremony

On April 14, Class 2022A graduated after an extensive four month of in-house training, eight month apprenticeship program with our partner companies in different departments and a pay forward project where they were involved in giving back to the communities around such as cleanness of the environment, training soft skills to younger children to inspire them.

Outreach Program

  • Tanzania Specialist: From the end of January to mid-February, we got to train trainers for the Tanzania Specialist team. This gave Jobortunity advantage to train its trainer assistant and building coordinator as well.
  • Maternity Africa: We continued our collaboration as per our agreement, which will end in June this year. Maternity Africa management requested soft skills training for its team of 75 staff.
  • Fides: Happiness Kaaya, Jobortunity senior Hi5 trainer and Outreach personnel, did a Training Needs Analysis at Fides. We are hoping that this analysis opens an opportunity to capacitate their staff.

Partnership:

  • E-Learning Platform: At the beginning of this year, we entered a partnership with Wise 360 to advance our E-learning Platform. At the moment, this project is sponsored by the Segal Family Foundation, Steel Blue, and the New Zealand High Commissioner. Jobortunity is working closely with Panta Media and Texto Media.
  • Segal Family Foundation: Robert (our Acting Managing Director) attended the SFF 2023 Annual Meeting in Rwanda of learning and connecting opportunities to be able to scout for funders and collaborate with other NGOs in the region.
  • MW De Hoop Foundation: We received 10,000 Euros from the Netherlands as a donation to help the Jobortunity program sustainability.
  • Youth scholarship support: Rijk Zwaan, one of our close partners, has continued to support Jobortunity youth by donating 1650 dollars to three students for their scholarships. Jobortunity appreciates their heartfelt effort to ensure that we keep helping the youth in our communities by making them professional and sustainable employees.

There are a lot of successful stories to share with you; we hope you have enjoyed reading the significant highlights of our achievement. Till then, thank you for supporting our youth and impacting their lives directly.

See you soon,

Robert Lyaruu

Acting Managing Director
