Karibu! We are a Tanzanian NGO dedicated to training, mentoring and coaching disadvantaged youth that have not had access to education. Our one-year Training of Youth is a personal and professional development program that gives vulnerable youth the skills to gain meaningful employment, transforming their lives and breaking the cycle of generational poverty.
Tanzania is one of Africa's fastest growing economies, however widespread poverty persists. Almost half of Tanzania's population is living on less than $1.90 per day. About 70% of young people lack access to secondary education, and the quality of education does not prepare them to find meaningful employment. Potential employers are looking to hire but do not find the basic personal, professional or life skills that are required. There is a skills gap that needs to be addressed.
Jobortunity provides a one-year Professional and Personal Development course based on our in-house Hi5 training program. Our program and curriculum was developed in 2009 to address the needs of the vulnerable youth in Tanzania: we are a grass roots organization with a local solution to a local challenge. Our trainers are also all graduates of our program, so they are best situated to coach, mentor and train our students and ensure the training program is effective and delivering impact.
The project will educate and prepare up to 100 students to find meaningful employment for themselves as well as support their families and communities. Each year up to 35% of our females students have small babies at home and need to earn more than a sustenance living to support their new family. Almost all of our students need to contribute to and support their multi-generational family. We aim to create opportunity for youth and break the cycle of generational poverty.
