EMPOWER 100 TANZANIAN YOUTHS THROUGH EDUCATION PROJECT

QUARTERLY REPORT (SEPTEMBER – DECEMBER 2021)

As we kick off this year, we would like to reflect and appreciate our last quarter of 2021. A lot of exciting opportunities opened up for our students both through inhouse class and in the field, due to the amazing support you have shown us.

Enjoy the overview and stories of our students below.

Community Clean-Up Day On September 17th,Jobortunityorganizedacommunityclean-upfortheareaoftheMeru DistrictCouncil. In collaboration with Environmental Officers and other representatives from Meru, all team members and 60 students got into the community for cleaning it up, but especially to convince them of the importance of a clean environment. Also in 2022 we will keep fighting for a culture change on cleanliness in our communities.

And…being present in the community that day also had a valuable side effect: promotion of Jobortunity’s mission.

Rijk Zwaan Day On September 24th, the class of 2021B had a study tour at Rijk Zwaan’s Greenhouses atChekereni. As the Tourism sector was largely suspended during Covid, Rijk Zwaan took many of our students for an apprenticeship and for which we are very grateful. This experience opened the eyes of our students. As one student told afterwards: “Working in Tourism has never been my interest. I like being outside in nature and this apprenticeship taught me that the skills I learn at Jobortunity are useful in every job or sector.”

So we will keep up exploring new sectors!

Vaccine and Covid On October 8th, our students visitedMeru Hospital to receive information on the Covidvaccines.Manyhospitalitycompaniesareorwillberequiringallstafftobevaccinated and that includes interns. Without pressuring the students, 9 students chose to take the ‘jab’ (Johnson&Johnson) at the end of the session.

Parents Day On October 12thparents of class 2021AvisitedJobortunityandspentthemorninglearningmoreabouttheprogram. However, the presentations given by their own sons and daughters touched them most. A parent said: “I am so proud of my son. He never had a goal in life and that worried me. Now he has and I’m sure he will get there.”

Study Tour at Arusha National Park On October 15th, our students of class 2021B visited Arusha National Park. We organized this tour as we find it important bringing awareness of the existence of parks nearby and the influence it has on tourism. The trip helped our students to see the variety of opportunities for their future worklife. And of course….a day out in nature, seeing the animals was an amazing experience for them.

New Class Selection for 2022AOn November 22ndweheld a selection week for the upcoming class of2022A. Out of a bigger group, we selected 33 youths (17 girls and 16 boys). They couldn’t believe their luck for a second chance to change their lives.

Healthy lunches for all students at Jobortuntiy For many of our students, healthy meals are not common at home every day. Therefore we cook our students a healthy lunch during the period of inhouse training (September-December).
