Summary

In any developing country, tapping into the skills potential of women can have a profound impact upon economic advancement at both the individual and community level. A staggering poverty rate of 25 to 40% coupled with the fact that only 21% of women are employed highlights the unlocked capacity that Pakistan's women hold: to both contribute to the financial stability of their families as well as furthering gender equality in the country.

Challenge

In any developing country, unlocking the skills potential of women can have a profound economic impact upon the individual and community level. A staggering poverty rate of 25 to 40% coupled with the fact that only 21% of women enter the workforce highlights the untapped capacity of women in Pakistan: the empowerment of women through vocational training is an unmet critical need that can have measurable results in both the economic and gender equality realms.

Solution

HOPE USA has been investing in underprivileged women in Pakistan by providing them with income-generating Vocational Training skills for over 15 years. Through the establishment of Vocational Training Centers throughout Pakistan, poor women are provided with the necessary training and skills to help uplift their families from the grips of poverty. Students are offered courses in Computer Languages, Sewing/Embroidery, and/or English as a Second Language. 80% of enrollees are women.

Long-Term Impact

Economic empowerment of women has both immediate and long-lasting benefits. In the short-term, women who acquire job training skills are able to contribute to the financial stability of their families. Moreover, economic empowerment of women is the first step in overall gender equality which includes social and political empowerment as well. HOPE USA aims to foster the economic empowerment of women in the short-term and lay the foundation for social and political empowerment in the long-run.
