In Gajahmungkur District, Semarang, a 19-year-old young woman named Thalitha has a strong ambition to deepen and expand her knowledge in the world of animation and illustration. She dreams of one day becoming an influencer in this creative field and inspiring others through her work. However, Thalitha’s educational journey has not been without challenges. At one point, she was even at risk of being unable to continue her studies to higher education due to financial constraints.
Her mother, Rohminiati now 47 years old, earns a living by selling chicken and beef soto. As a devoted and supportive mother, Rohminiati has always carried a clear dream: that her only daughter would be able to attend university and build a better future through education and meaningful work. Yet their economic situation often forced her to face difficult choices whether to prioritize developing her small business or saving for her daughter’s education.
Through a network of women entrepreneurs in her community, Rohminiati eventually joined YCAB Ventures. Through the program, she received access to business capital loans as well as entrepreneurship training to help strengthen and grow her small food business. Gradually, her business began to improve and the family’s economic situation slowly became more stable.
Still, the cost of higher education remained a major concern.
In 2023, when Thalitha was accepted into university, she also received a scholarship from YCAB Foundation. The scholarship, which covers tuition fees and provides a daily allowance, allowed her to fully focus on her studies while enabling her mother to concentrate on growing the family business. Today, Thalitha is considered one of the most outstanding students in her cohort. For her, receiving the scholarship not only secured her access to education but also gave her the confidence to envision a brighter future.
Through its integrated focus on Mother Earn and Youth Learn, YCAB believes that education is one of the most powerful pathways to break the cycle of poverty within families. Holistic interventions that support both parents and children can create sustainable change.
As seen in the story of Rohminiati and Thalitha, when families are given the opportunity and support they need, they can begin to dream again, and pursue a future that should be possible for many more families.
