A group of local women in Malawi have now completed training to operate a new egg incubator at the Farmer Field School.
The training focused on the practical skills needed to hatch chicks from incubated eggs and manage the process from egg setting through to hatching, the precise technical skills needed to launch a thriving community-led business.
Access to healthy chicks can be a challenge for many rural households. By producing chicks locally, the women will create an income-generating activity for themselves while helping other farmers build stronger and more productive village flocks.
The model is designed so that the benefits extend beyond the women directly involved. Farmers who purchase the chicks will have access to birds that can provide eggs, meat, and income for their families. A portion of the income generated from chick sales will also be reinvested into the Farmer Field School to support future training and ongoing operations.
To support the enterprise, a new egg incubator was recently installed at the school. This facility will enable chicks to be hatched and raised locally, creating a reliable source of birds for farmers in the area.
Visitors to the school will now be greeted by our brand new entrance sign! It is a small addition, but it proudly reflects the school's growing role as a place where community members can access training, share knowledge, and develop practical skills.
The countdown will begin when our first eggs enter the incubator. We are looking forward to sharing updates as the first chicks are hatched and the local women are able to supply neighbouring families with the means towards vital food and income.
Thank you for investing in grass-roots expertise and sustainable farming. None of this would have been possible without your support.
