Meet Ritu, one of our 977 young adults who received vocational training this year!

Ritu*, 20, was eager to earn her own money without moving far from home. She learned about NYF’s popular 10-day “Tea & Snacks Shop” program from a local women’s group and signed up right away. A few months later, Ritu is already established as a one-stop shop in her community, making a profit with warm, fresh snacks and spiced tea to go.

Tea has been an important part of Nepali culture for centuries. Warm, sweet Nepali-style tea is served as a sign of hospitality, and it plays an important role in many traditional Nepali ceremonies and festivals.

Nepali Chiya, or spiced Nepali milk tea, is also a comforting go-to treat enjoyed throughout the day by most Nepalis, starting first thing in the morning. Most people enjoy a cup of this tea two or three times a day—or more!

Across Nepal, this tea is prepared and served by savvy vendors (most of them women) who need only a simple cart, a few key pieces of equipment, ingredients, and a beloved snack recipe or two in order to make a good profit each day. It’s a flexible business plan that quickly gives women financial freedom, allowing them to invest in their futures and those of their children.

NYF’s Tea & Snacks Shop Training prepares young women with entrepreneurship training and accounting basics, start-up funding to cover a cart and the necessary equipment, recipes and training for highly marketable Nepali snacks, and real-world insights into how to run a profitable business of this kind. It’s been a popular course for many years because most graduates, like Ritu, experience transformative success after only a few weeks.

Thank you for supporting Nepal’s children and young adults as they pursue their education, building towards personal growth, financial sustainability, and the opportunities of their dreams!

Dhanyabad!
