Almost 3 years (out of 5 in all), thanks to the implementation of the Back to School Program-BSP in conjunction with the Skills Development Program and the BSP-sessions with families, we have achieved the following results with the 3rd generation of children who entered in 2014: 1) It is the first generation that has been achieved to have 100% of children studying. 2) Of these 85 boys and girls who are currently studying, a strong evidence is the enrollment of 59 children (69%) in 2 schools of their colonies: the “Urbana 1098” school and the “Juan de la Barrera” school; and the rest (31%) are in the INEA (National Institute of Education for Adults, for its acronym in Spanish) and other elementary schools.
Of this 100% of children (85), 21% (18) is also studying within the 2 BSP-groups: a) literacy and b) regularization. Being 6 for the first and 12 for the second groups. In the “literacy” group are the children who by national educational policy are attending certain degree but they dont know basic functions like reading and writing and therefore are at de risk of dropping out. And, in the “regularization” group are the children that needs to reinforce their academic skills in spanish or mathematics.
This achievement makes us very happy if we remember that they are children living in environments of violence and high marginalization; conditions that affect directly in their development and especially their cognitive skills. In this sense, the results means that the BSP have developed literacy skills, concentration and mathematics, logics, in a specialized way, as a part por Mayama Program.
As part of this program there are sessions every 2 months with children's parents. These sessions are key to their academic development, because the main goal is to create study habits, develope discipline and become to parents co-participants in the exercise of the right to education of their children.
Our challenge for this project that continues is to detect with much greater specificity why some children do not advance like the rest. For example the case of Luis Ángel, who goes in 3rd grade, is 10 years old and does not manage to advance in syllables. For this, the Neurological Evaluation Battery has been acquired to be applied in this new cycle 2017; And thus be able to give a pre-diagnosis and be able to channel certain cases to specialized instances depending on whether the child's problem is academic, neurological or psychological.
