Empower Highly Outcast Children and Their Families

In 2008, with the intention of seeking social justice and equal opportunities for girls and boys who live in poverty and violence situation, Jorge Huguenin founded Mayama A.C., (Civil Association for its acronym in Spanish). In the beginning, Mayama provided educational activities such as art classes, computer science lessons and Tae Kwon Do for 500 children in abandon, orphan and outcast situation from 14 shelter homes in the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara. In 2009, a diagnosis was made by specialists in the subjects of poverty and violence. In order to respond concretely to this diagnosis, Mayama, rethinking its mission, focused on five suburbs of the same community: “Cofradía, Emiliano Zapata, San Martin de las Flores, Plan de Oriente and Lomas del Tapatio”, located in Tlaquepaque and Tonala, Jalisco in Mexico.

The same year, Monica Varela and Alejandra Peña designed a Human Development Model based on alternative learning methodologies, also relying on alliances from NGO (Non Governanmental Organizations) as “Cuidarte” (Emotional development), Juconi (Violence), Youth Integration Centers (addiction prevention), “La Vaca independiente” (Communications skills methodologies).

From 2010 to nowadays, Mayama has served an average (annual) of 240 children and 130 families (840 direct and 2520 indirect beneficiaries), so they are able to develop skills that help them make assertive decisions based on their human rights, gender equality and peace culture. Mayama has also helped to improve their education and job expectations in a medium and long term, with the purpose of turning them into agents of positive change in their individual, family and community life.

It is noteworthy that the transparency, quality and professionalism of Mayama is backed up by institutions like CEMEFI (Mexican Center for Philanthropy), Filantrofilia A.C., Confío A.C. (Building transparent Civil Organizations). In addition, it has been recognized (April 2015) as a organization with Consultative Status of ECOSOC-UN (United Nations Economic and Social Council) and “Razón de Ser” Award (source category) by Merced Foundation.
