This project will empower 10,000 adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Kenya's Lake Victoria Basin and Coast to build resilience to climate-related mental and reproductive health risks. Girls will gain skills and opportunities for better health, education & livelihoods, as well as break cycles of poverty and vulnerability via climate change awareness, climate-smart life skills, psychosocial and reproductive health support & gender responsive financing and protection.
AGYW in Kenya's Lake Victoria Basin and Coastal Region are under increased risk from climate change. Droughts, floods, and heatwaves, exacerbate gender disparities, cut off access to health, education, and expose girls to stress, despair, suicidal thoughts, transactional sex, unwanted pregnancies, drug misuse, violence, and poverty. Yet, they remain overlooked in climate-smart planning and underrepresented in health and economic programs. Urgent, targeted support is needed to break this cycle.
The project will build the resilience of AGYW in Kenya by creating awareness of the climate-health nexus, implementing locally co-created essential mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) interventions, establishing girls-led life skills programs, providing reproductive health support, creating safe spaces and delivering digital financial literacy, mentorship, and leadership training. They will gain climate-smart life skills-equipping them for healthier, more resilient futures.
This project will create a new generation of resilient AGYW able to construct sustainable futures, handle climate change, and promote mental and sexual health. They will achieve economic independence by developing financial literacy and life skills, so ending the cycle of poverty. AGYW will have increased leadership abilities and social support networks, resulting in healthier communities, future female leaders, and better climate awareness, leaving a beneficial legacy for future generations.
