The Women's Sewing Cooperative in Fond des Blancs, Haiti is busy; we were selected to machine sew 200 wine bags for customers in California. Each bag is made of sturdy canvas and designed to hold six bottles of wine. The bags are sewn individually and all labels are hand sewn onto the bags. This project will employ about 21 women for over then next two months.
However, Rural Fond des Blancs, Haiti is not on the electric grid in Haiti. In order to run our sewing machines, we rely on solar power and a gas generator. Our solar system was damaged last week by lightening. As a result, we are running the generator and spending about $12 per day on gasoline. In addition to the increased cost of running the generator all day, we also must endure the noise of the generator and the polution it causes.
We need $4600 to buy 6 new batteries and two new inverters to fix our solar system. Today is GlobalGIving's Matching day for the Caribbean. A donation today will help us upgrade the electrical system at the Artisanat this month in order to keep the women working in an environment that is safe and clean.
