Summary

We are establishing the Omel Farm Hub Initiative (OFAH) in Omel Subcounty, Gulu, Northern Uganda as a social enterprise of Friends of Children Circle Uganda to strengthen food security and long-term sustainability. Each year, 50 farmers receive training, quality seeds, and tarpaulins to improve yields and incomes, reaching 250 farmers over five years. The hub integrates crop and livestock production, grain trading, farm-to-school supply, and eco-tourism, generating income to sustain FOCC program

Challenge

In Northern Uganda, most families rely on small-scale farming, yet outdated practices, limited access to quality inputs, poor post-harvest handling, and climate shocks result in low yields and food insecurity. Schools struggle to sustain feeding programs, affecting children's learning, while youth face unemployment and limited agribusiness skills. At the same time, FOCC depends heavily on unpredictable donor funding, threatening long-term program sustainability.

Solution

The Omel Farm Hub Initiative will establish a climate-smart demonstration farm integrating crop and livestock production, grain trading, and value addition to improve productivity and market access. Each year, 50 farmers will receive hands-on training, quality seeds, and tarpaulins to reduce post-harvest losses and increase incomes. Schools will be supported with farm-to-school supply and garden models. As FOCC's social enterprise, the hub will generate income to sustainably fund its Programs.

Long-Term Impact

Within five years, the Omel Farm Hub will strengthen food security and incomes for 250 trained farmers and over 12,000 indirectly benefiting family members through improved climate-smart practices and structured grain trading. Schools will access fresh produce, and youth will view agriculture as a viable livelihood. Enterprise revenues are projected to cover up to 50% of FOCC's core costs, creating a sustainable model that reinvests farming profits into community programs.
