Continuing to educate girls during COVID-19

By Shelby Grates | Development and Operations Associate

Thank you so much for supporting our project of empowering Cambodian girls with an education.

Every dollar has a significant impact on providing education and empowering students and their families in Cambodia, and your support means even more now as we navigate the challenges COVID-19 has imposed upon our community.

As we know, adversity and disasters disproportionately affect the most vulnerable in a population, and our community, especially our girls in the community, have been most directly affected. With caretaking responsibilities often falling upon women and girls, we work hard to ensure girls and women are supported so they can continue focusing on their education.

Currently, Cambodia is experiencing an outbreak in COVID-19 cases which for several weeks placed the majority of our community in what was determined by the government as a red zone, meaning leaving the house for purposes other than grocery shopping and medical treatment was strictly prohibited. This placed an extreme financial strain on our families. With school closures, we have had to quickly adapt to provide distance learning solutions to ensure our students continue to receive a quality education given the limitations.

CCF quickly developed distance learning and online learning activities including videos, e-lessons, and education packages to support students’ education while keeping them safe. These hard-copy education packages are accompanied by weekly practice exercises for students who do not have internet access (for Kindergarten students to 8th Graders). Students collect education packages to take home, and return the completed practice exercises and home lessons and return the completed exercises to the school at designated times. Additionally, our schools organized our teachers to provide direct instruction in small groups when safe and possible. When the situation permits and when needed, the teachers visit the community directly to assist and teach students in need of additional help. For students in the provinces, CCF organized distance learning packages to be sent to them regularly as well.

In addition to preparing education packages and accompanying exercises for students at Prektoil and our other primary schools, CCF has developed an e-learning curriculum for students with internet-enabled learning tools for secondary school students. CCF set up 8 classrooms at one of our satellite schools for those students in Grades 9 to 12, who did not have access to smart devices to take online classes. Social distancing measures were practiced in those rooms with a capacity limited to 10 students.

Your support allows us to continue to pivot to address the needs of our community and continue our mission of providing education to the most impoverished children in Cambodia. Thank you for your generosity.
