Girls are back physically at schools

After months of Covid-19 interruption, the situation is now under control by the Cambodian government. The Cambodian Ministry of Health has reported that 94% of the target population was vaccinated. Schools and all the sectors across the country are allowed to reopen. All our girls are now back physically in school. They are very excited to meet their friends and teachers again. Thank you for supporting our project of empowering Cambodian girls with an education. All of us at Cambodian Children's Fund are happy to share some good news.

For the first half of the year 2022, We had a remarkable achievement for our Grade 12 students who achieved an 82% pass rate (75% female), a clear 15 points above the national average of 65%. The average pass rate for Phnom Penh was 55%. Two of our long-term students (One female) received an A grade, a first for us. This puts them in the top 2% of students nationwide. Four students (three female) received a B.

Though schools are allowed to reopen, to follow the government safety procedures we had to schedule students on a rotation of 50% study in class and 50% study at home. CCF’s Education Program is working hard in providing blended learning, physical and digital learning. More and more, we are trying to integrate more technology into teaching and learning ensuring the best quality of education for our girls.

Again, all of us at CCF are grateful for your support. In challenging times, the more vulnerable are exponentially affected, so ensuring girls continue to receive an education is crucial in ensuring they have successful and fulfilling lives. Thank you for supporting this.

Providing a Safe Community for Girls to Learn

After many challenging months, we are thrilled to be optimistic about the current COVID-19 situation in Steung Meanchey.

COVID rates are currently averaging at under 100 infections a day. Phnom Penh has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, with an impressive 99% of those eligible having received both vaccines. Borders are now open and visas are allowed for vaccinated visitors, which will slowly begin to improve the economy, which heavily significantly on tourism.

The Ministry of Education Youth announced that all schools can open for all grade levels as of the 1st of November, 2021, following guidelines to minimize capacity and keep students safe. This is fantastic news for our students, who have endured and adapted to continuous changes to their education.

Over the course of the pandemic, the resiliency of our female students has been impressive.

They have maintained their enthusiasm to continue their education despite additional obstacles. Providing distance learning to students in an area experiencing extreme poverty has proven to be difficult. Students don't have computers or access to computers beyond our computer labs at schools, and often don't have internet. We have developed at-home learning packets and lessons students can access from family members' mobile devices. If they did not have accessible devices, we provided them.

Despite these challenges, the tenacity of our students is incredible; distance learning attendance rate averages at 97%. Students are excited to return to school to return to a more hands-on learning experience (safely) surrounded by their peers.

We are keeping a close eye on how the COVID-19 situation develops and on the impact of the Omicron variant, and will of course adapt to changes to ensure students remain safe as that is our #1 priority. For now, we are excited and optimistic about returning to school and are currently focusing on ensuring students are equipped with all the supplies they need to excel in in-person learning and ensure our classrooms are stocked to support an engaging educational experience.

Safely Educating Girls in Cambodia as Schools Reopen

Thank you again for supporting our project of empowering Cambodian girls with an education. All of us at Cambodian Children's Fund are happy to share some good news.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration announced schools were cleared to reopen on September 15, 2021, following the Ministry of Education's Operation Procedures, ensuring safe reopenings.

Prioritizing education for our grade 9 and 12 students is crucial, as these students face significant exams this year, determining placement for grade 9 students and whether or not grade 12 students will be continuing to college. Students in these grades began returning to school on September 22.

Students in grades 7, 8, 10, and 22 will begin returning to school on October 22nd.

After getting approval to safely reopen kindergarten and primary schools, we will do so in the third phase.
