Making a Difference in Malawi

By Tessa Bryant | Grants Manager

Your contribution to Days for Girls’ Empowering African Girls with Health & Education project is making a positive impact for Malawian menstruators. In Malawi, women and girls face barriers to adequate menstrual health, including a lack of access to menstrual products, accurate MH information, and social environments that support them to manage their periods with health, safety and dignity. In many communities, menarche is viewed as a sign of marital readiness regardless of age, and girls experience forced isolation and social and eating restrictions during menstruation.

In 2020-2021, Days for Girls launched an initiative across seven districts in Malawi to address these challenges and support women and girls at home, at school, and in the community. In 2023, we are investing in expanding our MLE capacity in order to better harness, apply, and share the amazing data and insights we have collected over the past year using our MLE toolkit. Our team consistently takes lessons learned in one district and adapts our activities to improve programming in the next district, working closely with local leaders to ensure that our programs address the unique culture and norms of each region.

Recently, Days for Girls has engaged with the Rhumpi, Dedza and Mangochi Districts, reaching the following numbers:

  • Rhumpi District - 570 girls, 66 boys
  • Dedza District - 570 girls, 67 boys
  • Mangochi District - 570 girls, 67 boys

Days for Girls has also had meetings with Chiefs, elders, Parents and Teachers Committee members, Mother Board Leaders, Teachers, Community Counselors and religious leaders. Evaluation data was collected using the DfG Malawi MLE survey tool which includes both qualitative and quantitative questions. Our MLE data will inform future programming and demonstrate the difference DfG Kits and education are making. Your generous support enables this project and others to continue, supporting the advancement of menstrual equity throughout Africa.
