Literacy is the cornerstone for success and opportunities. Yet, with great concern, 60% of children in our public schools are not reading at grade level. This represents the unrealized potential and opportunities denied to a significant portion of our learners. Educating teachers about dyslexia and hidden learning difficulties play pivotal role in changing the whole culture of the school. We target 750 learners from marginalised and under-served communities in Kenya through training teachers.
60% of learners in Kenyan schools in grades 3-8 cannot read at grade level. Majority have invisible, undiagnosed learning difficulties. Teachers in Kenya lack adequate training and understanding of the learning differences, leading to challenges in identifying and supporting the affected learners. As a result, there is a misinterpretation of behaviour, missed opportunities for intervention, and increased stress and anxiety, which have a significant impact on the academic, emotional, well-being
We recognize the critical importance of early detection for prompt intervention. Our focus is on empowering teachers working in marginalized and underserved communities within pre-primary and Grades 1 to 3 levels with extensive knowledge and skills to recognize, understand, and assist learners with dyslexia and other hidden learning challenges. We aim to cultivate an inclusive educational setting, ensuring that every learner receives the support they need to thrive.
Our long term goal is that children with learning difficulties from marginalised and under-served communities are not left behind. There will be reduced stigma and misconception leading to enhanced social and emotional wellbeing of learners that will enhance their academic success. Reduced number of children dropping out of school prematurely. The project will impact 750 learners and 45 teachers from poor, under-served and marginalised communities.
