Dara aims to implement the Family Action Plan, assisting vulnerable families to create autonomy and potentialize their development. Today, Dara attends to about 300 families, providing social assistance, medicines and income generation courses. The women served by the Institute are single mothers of sick children, and have a family income of less than 1 minimum wage ($255 USD a month). More than that, they are engines of family social transformation.
Brazil is the second country with the highest inequality in the G20, according to a study carried out in the member countries. Women and black people are those who suffer the most from the impacts of inequality, and therefore, they form the majority of the public served by Dara. Our families have health issues, difficulties in income generation and, often, poor mental health. This project will affect more than 300 black women and their families who live in poverty in Rio de Janeiro.
We are the only organization in the world offering a team of professionals, including architects, doctors, nutritionists, psychologists, social workers, and educators, who work as a true task force dedicated to the development of these families. Our goal is the empowerment of these families, which will only be achieved if they are guided on a journey of empowerment and self-discovery.
According to research conducted by Georgetown University, 3 to 5 years after completing the PAF program, family income practically doubles and, in the same period, hospital readmissions fall by 86%. Of these families, 28% had their own home at the beginning of the program. Three to five years after the rise, that number increases to 50%. Through 32 years, 24 organizations were inspired by Dara's work, causing 85,000 people directly assisted in the fight against poverty.
