Expanding opportunities..

By Karen Sugar and Bukenya Muusa | Directors, WGEF

In 2017, WGEF expanded our loan program to include over 1700 new clients. This type of growth is critical in enabling women in northern Uganda rebuild their lives and communities. Included in the new loan portfolio is 713 agro loans.

The following is a field report from October this year:

CONFIDENCE AND HAPPINESS THROUGH INCOME!

Deep in Purongo Village, Nwoya District lives a woman names Alike O. She is 38 years old, married with 5 children.  WGEF has supported her with access to microloans of $350 that enabled her to hire a tractor that opened her land where she planted rice and sim sim.

The business skills and training that she attained enabled her to search for the latest market prices, and get better rates for her crops, rather than being taken advantage of by middlemen, she contacts buyers on her own and searches for the best market price in town. None of this was possible before joining the WGEF program.

"I am a better and empowered woman now," she says with pride.

She goes on to say "joining WGEF's program not only provided me important economic advantages, but also education and other social benefits."

Alike O. now owns her own piece of land and plans to construct a permanent house for her family. Being able to access loans from WGEF enabled her to increase her crop production and expanding to different crop types. She also says, "the love has increased in my house. Now I have a cretain degree of financial independence."

She no longer needs to ask her husband formoney t buy everyday items. This, in turn, has made space for more equality, respect, and harmony in the household.

"Thank you, WGEF for supporting women in Uganda."

We hope you are proud and inspired to be a part of WGEF and our mission to empower women, expand liberties and equality.

Karen and Bukenya
