Social Inclusion through swimming for deaf kids

By Ernest Appiah | Project Coordinator

The ANOPA Project over a period of one year is seeking to engage and train more than 800 deaf kids in swimming. The Swimming Project will give the unique opportunity to these children to integrate with other children within the community and the society in general.

The project has so far trained more many  kids in the sport of swimming. They include both males and females from the community and the school for the deaf in Cape Coast. Training activities take place twice in a week at the premises of the Coastal Television(Agoro Fie), Cape Coast. Due to the high interest and patronage by the children the project has made plans to increase the training days and have more impact on the children.

The Children are equally motivated and improving tremendously in their swimming skills and plans are far underway to start engaging them in local competitions in and around the Central Region.

Children are transported every monday and wednesday from thier school and their communities to the centre for training. Through the intervention of our donors like you the project has purchased swimming equipments such as pool noodles, pool boards and some swimming goggles.

Our swimming for the deaf kids project has received a unique intervention from a world renowned footballer Memphis Depay formally of Manchester and now with Lyon.He paid a private visit to the ANOPA Project in Cape Coast in connection with our deaf kids program in swimming. He met the kids at the swimming ground and engaged with them on the need to do sports and build confidence thereby integrating successfully into the society.

He urged the kids to learn hard and be focus driven in life and ask God for a successful life.

Memphis Depay upon witnessing their training has resolved to sponsor additional 100 deaf kids to learn how to swim over a period of six months ending december.

The Children are very happy and motivated by his gesture and look forward to studying hard and improving on their swimming skills. Your various contributions to the deaf swimming project has given us this unique opportunity to be noticed by an icon with a heart and has contributed immensely to the development of swimming among deaf children.

We are happy for your continious support in helping the non-hearing children in learning swimming.
