Project Follow-Up Report: Dairy Cold Chain Initiative

Building a Sustainable Dairy Value Chain in Rural Nigeria

By Saidu Abubakar | Project Lead

We are pleased to provide a follow-up update on the progress of our project, “Building a Sustainable Dairy Value Chain in Rural Nigeria,” an initiative designed to support over 7,000 rural dairy farmers through climate-smart dairy solutions. The project focuses on reducing post-harvest milk losses, improving rural livelihoods, strengthening food security, and promoting environmentally sustainable dairy production systems.

The initiative aims to provide solar-powered milk cooling infrastructure, veterinary support services, cold-chain logistics, and farmer capacity-building programs that will collectively improve milk quality, increase incomes, and reduce methane emissions associated with dairy spoilage.

Progress Update

Although the project is still at an early stage and operating with limited financial resources, significant groundwork activities have been successfully completed to position the project for effective implementation once full funding is secured.

1. Community Engagement and Selection

Our team completed preliminary field assessments and stakeholder consultations across targeted rural communities. The selection process prioritized communities with:

  • High concentration of active dairy households
  • Significant levels of daily milk production
  • Limited access to cold-chain infrastructure
  • High vulnerability to milk spoilage and market losses
  • Strong community willingness to participate in cooperative project activities

This process has helped identify communities where the intervention can achieve the greatest social and economic impact.

2. Dairy Farmer Clustering and Coordination

To improve efficiency and long-term sustainability, dairy farmers within selected communities have been organized into structured clusters and cooperative groups. These clusters will serve as the foundation for:

  • Coordinated milk collection systems
  • Future installation of cooling infrastructure
  • Veterinary outreach and extension services
  • Farmer training and knowledge-sharing activities
  • Improved market access and aggregation systems

The clustering process is also strengthening community ownership and participation in the project.

3. Preliminary Stakeholder Mobilization

Initial engagement has commenced with local leaders, dairy actors, and community representatives to build awareness around the project objectives and implementation approach. This early mobilization is helping establish trust and preparing communities for smooth rollout during the implementation phase.

Funding Status

The total funding requirement for full implementation of the project across all targeted communities remains $400,000.

To date, we have received a total donation of $25.98.

While this amount represents only a small fraction of the required budget, we sincerely appreciate the support and encouragement received so far. Every contribution demonstrates confidence in the vision of transforming rural dairy systems and improving the livelihoods of vulnerable farming households.

Next Phase Priorities

With additional financial support, the project will immediately transition into the next implementation phase, which includes:

  1. Procurement and installation of solar-powered milk cooling tanks
  2. Deployment of cold-chain transportation and milk collection systems
  3. Provision of veterinary kits and mobile animal healthcare services
  4. Farmer training on hygienic milk handling and climate-smart dairy practices
  5. Strengthening cooperative management and milk aggregation systems

These interventions are expected to significantly reduce milk spoilage, improve product quality, increase farmer incomes, and create more resilient dairy value chains in underserved rural communities.

Expected Impact

Upon full implementation, the project is expected to:

  • Support over 7,000 rural dairy farmers
  • Reduce post-harvest milk losses
  • Increase household incomes and economic resilience
  • Improve access to safe and nutritious dairy products
  • Empower women involved in dairy production and marketing
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to dairy waste
  • Strengthen rural food systems and local economies

Conclusion

We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and sustainable impact as we continue advancing this initiative. The progress achieved so far despite limited funding demonstrates both the dedication of our team and the strong interest from participating communities.

We sincerely thank all supporters, partners, and well-wishers who continue to believe in this vision. With increased collaboration and funding support, we are confident that this project can deliver lasting transformation across rural dairy communities in Nigeria.
