Project report: Dairy Cold Chain

By Saidu Abubakar | Project Lead

We are pleased to share an update on the progress of our project “Building a Sustainable Dairy Value Chain in Rural Nigeria,” which aims to support 7,000 rural dairy farmers through the provision of solar-powered cooling tanks, veterinary services, cold-chain infrastructure, and other climate-smart solutions. The project is designed to reduce milk spoilage, increase farmers’ income, cut methane emissions, and strengthen food security for thousands of households.

Progress So Far

Despite the limited resources available at this early stage, our team has successfully completed several foundational activities that do not require large financial inputs. These include:

1. Community Selection

We conducted a thorough assessment to identify the most suitable communities for the project. Criteria included number of active dairy households, existing milk production levels, vulnerability to spoilage, and willingness to participate.

2. Clustering of Dairy Farmers

Within each selected community, farmers have been clustered into organized groups to support efficient coordination, future training, and streamlined access to project services such as milk collection, veterinary outreach, and equipment distribution.

These preliminary steps are essential for ensuring smooth implementation once the full funding becomes available.

Funding Status

Our project requires a total of $400,000 to provide full-scale implementation across all targeted communities.

So far, we have received a donation of $25.98.

This contribution though modest is deeply appreciated by our entire team and by the dairy farmers who stand to benefit from the project. Every donation, no matter the size, strengthens our resolve and pushes us closer to delivering life-changing support to rural households.

Looking Ahead

We are now seeking additional funding to move into the next critical phases of implementation, including the procurement of:

1. Solar-powered milk cooling systems

2. Cold-chain and transportation equipment

3. Veterinary kits and mobile animal health services

4. Farmer training on hygienic milk handling and climate-smart practices

With your support, we can reduce milk losses, enhance incomes, empower rural women, cut methane emissions, and secure nutritious dairy supply for thousands of households.

We remain committed to transparency, impact, and long-term sustainability.

Thank you for believing in this project and for giving us the encouragement to keep pushing forward.
