We Have a New Office in Kakuma Town Serving Refugees and Host Community!

Dear Donors and Friends,
We are excited to let you know that in May this year we signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the UNHCR to start working with older refugees in Kakuma Refugee camps alongside the host community in North Western Kenya.
Following the above milestone, we opened our third country office in Kakuma town from June 1, 2026, to oversee all our humanitarian activities in Turkana County.
Our humanitarian initiatives in Turkana County will feature two pillars:
- AgeWatch ElderCare - delivers a contiuum of professional elder care including home care and day care to ageing refugees including those living with disabilities.
- AgeWatch Futures - offers livelihoods opportunities and kills for refugee youth and women in Kenya; a bridge from aid dependency to self-reliant community life. Core tracks of this pillar include Agribusiness (climate-resilient farming and markets), Digital Skills (freelancing and enrepreneurship) and Humanitarian Initiatives (village savings and loans associations, mentorship & UNHCR-aligned livelihoods)
We deeply appreciate your continued support that ensures dignified and graceful ageing while focusing on dignity in every season!
Looking ahead to the remaining part of 2026, we continue to seek bold and compassionate leadership to protect the dignity, health and rights of older refugees in Kenya, starting with the over 4,000 living in Kakuma Refugee Camps in North Western Kenya.

Working With UNHCR to Assist Older Refugees

Dear Donors and Friends,
We are excited to share with you our first report of this year.
Looking ahead to 2026, we are seeking bold and compassionate leadership to protect the dignity, health, and righst of older refugees in Kenya, starting with those in Kakuma Refugee Camp in North Western Kenya.
Early this year we created an annual work plan outlining our project goals and objectives aimed at addressing the needs of older persons and their households in the refugee camp and the surrounding host community in Kakuma area of Turkana County. We hope to emabrk on the actual work from Q2'-2026.
We truly apprecaite your continued support as we strive to make meaningful impact on the lives of older persons in Kenya as a whole, and in Kakuma Refugee Camp in particular.

Reframing Care in the Refugee Camps: Deploying Research-Based Approach.

Dear Donors and Friends,
We write to update you on our Q3'2025 activities in refugee households in Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee camps.
Due to limited donor support, AgeWatch Africa was not able to engage in much project implementation activities either within the refugee camps or the host community. We have however been engaged in initial research work to establish specific livelihood needs within these camps. During this period AgeWatch Africa enrolled group members within the camps as follows: youth members, women members and older persons members of AgeWatch Afruca, totalling 162.
Through the above groups, AgeWatch Africa is using the focus group discussion approach AgeWatch is finding out their specific needs as we continue to approach various donors for support. In most cases, the three age groups are from same households where living conditions continue to deteriorate due to dimished donor support. The following needs earlier highlighted in our previuos report continue to worsen within the refugee camps:
- High youth and women unemployment
- High dependency on humanitarian aid.
- Limited access to skills training, markets, and digital tools.
- Increased poverty, food and income insecurity, and psychosocial stress.
The AgeWatch Africa team remains optimistic of your ongoing support to be able to continue working with and for this vulnerable group of persons.
