Focusing on the Needs of Older Refugees in Northern Kenya

Dear Donors and Friends,

Thank you for supporting us as we continue to serve our ageing neighbors throughout Kenya in 2025. Through your generous donations in 2024, we have been able to continue providing necessary services to the most vulnerable of our neighbors—the older persons.

With 2025 quickly advancing, we wanted to share with you some of our accomplishments over the last few months. Remember, these accomplishments would not have been possible without your continued support and encouragement.

In December 2024, we made entry into our ninth County in Kenya; Turkana County in Northern Kenya. This is a special effort targeting older persons in Kakuma and Kalobeyei Refugee Camps, home to some over 4,000 refugees from different countries, mainly Sudan, DRC, and Somalia. We are working in partnership with UNHCR, and will shortly share updates with you.

This summer, our board of directors was revamped with new members with insightful skill sets and experiences. Equally, the Advisory Board received support by new members with varying territorial and professional experiences, while our team has also received vital support from international consultants. Similarly, from early this year we have assembled a strong team to showcase our story across different social media channels. That team is now working to improve our website and overall online visibility. Follow us on social media to learn more about these exciting changes!

During Q1’2025, we continue to pursue various partnership opportunities with various stakeholders, key among them is the establishment of a Private Public Partnership with Nairobi City County Government, to roll out an extensive five year healthy ageing program that focuses on the overall well-being of older persons in the entire Nairobi City County. We are excited to share this and other results with you soon!

Our next major event will be the commemoration of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15, 2025. Prior to that, we plan to take part in Mother’s Day celebration on May 10-11, 2025. With your kind support, we hope to continue rolling out our home-care and group daycare services for the vulnerable under-served older people throughout Kenya.

We cannot emphasize enough the impact of your support on the lives of older men and women (and their households) that we serve. Support Older People to Endure Flash Floods

Despite the challenging post-COVID economic times, the AgeWatch Africa team has stayed its course. We continue to grow our model into the Lake Victoria basin counties of Western Kenya, focusing mainly on our home-based care pillar that is the most popular in the community.

Kenya has been receiving heavy rains since the last week of March 2024 which marked the beginning of the long-rains season. This year's long rains have been characterized by heavy storms that caused heavy rainfall, flash floods and mud slides in several parts of the country including Kisumu County. The resultant effect has been displacement of over 200,000 people, loss of over 200 lives, over 200 people injured, over 70 people missing, destruction of over 36,000 acres of croplands and over 40 roads. The affected population is in urgent need of food, non-food items (NFIs), water and sanitation services to address the aforementioned needs caused by the widespread flood devastation. Particular attention is needed on the most vulnerable groups including orphaned vulnerable children (OVCs), older persons and people living with disabilities (PLWDs); the three main target groups that AgeWatch Africa works with and for. We are targeting a multi-pronged response including the provision of food, NFIs and WASH in the communities.

Spikes in Needs: The situation in Nyando/Nyalenda, Kadibo, and Kisumu Central Villages in Kisumu County has deteriorated rapidly due to the heavy rains and subsequent flooding. These areas have experienced significant spikes in needs, with reports of fatalities, displacements, damage to infrastructure, and disruption of livelihoods to all age groups but with the highest impact on the vulnerable households. AgeWatch Africa continues to work closely with local, national and international partners to address the plight of these vulnerable age cohorts. With your kind and loving support, we will deliver life-saving assistance and mitigate the impact of the flooding crisis on vulnerable groups including older persons, OVCs in their care and PLWDs.
