Education on menstrual hygiene management was conducted in nine (9) basic schools in the Adaklu District, namely, Adaklu Ando Basic School, Adaklu Kodzobi Basic School, Adaklu Vodze Basic School, Adaklu Have Basic School, Adaklu Dzakpo Basic School, Adaklu Wumenu Basic School, Adaklu Waya Basic School, Adaklu Goefe Basic School, and Adaklu Tsriefe Basic School. The sessions aimed to equip adolescent girls with knowledge and practical skills to manage menstruation with confidence and maintain proper hygiene while in school. Out of these engagements 532 girls were reached, while 115 boys were engaged to help support the girlchild and break the stigma around menstruation.
The engagements created a safe and supportive environment where the girls could openly discuss issues related to puberty, menstrual health, and personal hygiene. Through interactive discussions and demonstrations, the girls were educated on the changes that occur during adolescence, the importance of menstrual hygiene, and how to properly use sanitary pads (Volta Pad). They were also guided on how to wash and care for the Volta Pad and maintain personal hygiene during their menstrual periods.
As part of sustaining the knowledge gained, 30 students from each school formed a Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Club. These clubs will serve as peer learning platforms where students can continue to learn, share experiences, and promote good hygiene practices among their peers while helping to reduce stigma around menstruation in their schools.
During the discussions, many girls shared challenges affecting their ability to maintain good menstrual hygiene. A major concern raised was the inability of some parents and caregivers to provide adequate underwear, making it difficult for the girls to change regularly during menstruation. The girls therefore requested support with underwear to help them maintain proper hygiene and dignity while attending school. They equally requested support for menstrual health and hygiene educators who can teach them regularly on adolescent reproductive health as well as posters and hygiene manuals.
