Empowering Adolescents on Reproductive Health

By Roberta Donkor | Manageress

Access to accurate information about puberty and reproductive health remains a significant challenge for many adolescents, particularly in rural communities where cultural misconceptions and stigma often prevent open conversations. To address this gap, Amenuveve SIV Organization, through its Adolescent Reproductive Health Rights (ARHR) Clubs, organized an educational outreach across nine (9) basic schools in the Adaklu District to equip young people with the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate adolescence safely and with dignity.

The interactive sessions brought together members of the ARHR Clubs, creating a safe and supportive environment where students could freely ask questions and discuss issues affecting their physical and emotional well-being. Facilitators educated participants on the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty, with particular emphasis on female body development, the anatomy and functions of the female reproductive system, and the menstrual cycle. Students learned how menstruation occurs, why it is a natural biological process, and the importance of maintaining proper menstrual hygiene.

The discussions also sought to dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation, helping both girls and boys develop positive attitudes toward menstrual health. By promoting accurate information and respectful dialogue, the sessions encouraged empathy, reduced stigma, and empowered girls to manage their menstrual health with greater confidence.

Beyond reproductive health education, participants were encouraged to respect their bodies, make informed decisions, seek trusted guidance when faced with challenges, and support one another as peer advocates within their schools. The education forms part of Amenuveve's broader commitment to creating safe learning environments where adolescents are informed, protected, and empowered to realize their full potential.

A total of 270 members participated in this discussion comprising 117 Males and 153 females.

To sustain and expand this initiative, additional support is needed to:

  • Provide reusable sanitary pads (Volta Pad) and menstrual hygiene kits to vulnerable girls.
  • Develop and distribute age-appropriate reproductive health educational materials.
  • Train additional peer educators and teacher patrons to strengthen ARHR Clubs.
  • Organise regular mentorship and life skills sessions for adolescents across more schools.
  • Expand the programme to reach additional schools and out-of-school adolescents within the district.
  • Support is also needed to provide snacks for the students during this educative sessions
