The mental health screening and training was carried out in four communities (Adaklu Waya, Vodze, Wumenu, and Geofe) with the aim of strengthening family bonds and promoting the mental well-being of caregivers and children. The intervention focused on equipping caregivers with the knowledge and skills needed to manage mental health challenges and provide supportive home environments.
A range of activities were conducted, including mental health training, counselling, and screening. 333 households were successfully reached, with a total of 680 individuals screened. Participation was strong across most communities, and the exercise provided valuable data on the health and well-being of caregivers and children.
Findings from the screenings revealed several critical issues affecting families. A significant number of caregivers had cases like stress, depression, and anxiety, which calls for a need for continued mental health support. These findings underscored the interconnected nature of mental well-being and child protection.
Mental health counselling was also offered to those experiencing emotional challenges. Despite challenges such as transportation constraints, limited resources, and inadequate health personnel, the intervention significantly enhanced caregivers’ capacity to support their families. Overall, the activity contributed to building healthier, more resilient households and advancing efforts to prevent child–caregiver separation.
