Project Report: Impacts of Empowering 100 Maidens on Sustainable Snail Farming

Introduction

This report documents the progress, challenges, and impacts of the initiative aimed at empowering 100 maidens through sustainable snail farming. The project was conceived to promote economic self-sufficiency among maidens, particularly survivors of the ongoing anglophone conflict, by providing them with the skills and initial resources to establish their own snail farms. Despite significant funding constraints, the project has made notable strides, thanks to donations from UNIMAC Board members and proceeds from product sales.

Background

The ongoing anglophone conflict has left many young women and maidens vulnerable, with limited access to economic opportunities. Recognizing this, UNIMAC embarked on a project to train and empower maidens in sustainable snail farming, a viable and environmentally friendly enterprise that can generate income and promote food security.

Objectives

- To train 100 maidens in sustainable snail farming techniques.
- To provide startup resources for establishing individual snail farms.
- To promote economic independence and resilience among maidens.
- To assess the impact of empowerment on their socio-economic status.

Implementation

Training and Workshop Organization

Due to funding limitations, UNIMAC could not fully finance the startup phase for all maidens. Nonetheless, a comprehensive workshop was organized, leveraging donations from Board members and income from product sales. The workshop covered:

- Basic snail farming techniques
- Farm management and maintenance
- Disease prevention and control
- Business planning and marketing

Provision of Start-Up Resources

While full funding for startup resources was not secured, the initial training has prepared the maidens to establish their own farms as soon as resources become available. The organization is actively seeking further funding and partnerships to support the procurement of starter kits, snail stock, and other necessary inputs.

Challenges Faced

- Funding Constraints: The primary obstacle has been the inability to secure the estimated funds needed for full project implementation.
- Conflict Impact: The ongoing anglophone conflict has affected both the mental well-being of maidens and logistical aspects of project delivery.
-Limited Resources: Insufficient funds for subsidizing or fully providing start-up materials.

Achievements and Impacts

Despite these challenges, the project has achieved several positive outcomes:

-Capacity Building: 100 maidens have received training, enhancing their skills and knowledge in snail farming.
- Increased Awareness: The workshop increased awareness about sustainable livelihoods and entrepreneurial opportunities.
- Community Engagement: The initiative fostered a sense of community and resilience among maidens.
- Foundation for Future Growth: Trained maidens are now equipped to establish their farms once resources are available, laying the groundwork for sustainable income generation.

Conclusion

The initiative to empower 100 maidens in sustainable snail farming has demonstrated that even with limited resources, capacity building and community engagement can create a foundation for economic resilience. While full implementation remains a challenge due to funding constraints, the momentum generated has set a precedent for future support and expansion. UNIMAC remains committed to overcoming these obstacles and enhancing the livelihoods of conflict-affected maidens.
