Aid Delivered To South Kalimantan Flood Survivors

After the Sulawesi's earthquake occured in January 2021, there were floods across South-Kalimantan respectively and the ACT teams have been responded to flood survivors.

In addition to dispatching rescue teams, Aksi Cepat Tanggap immediately responded to the needs of flood survivors in South Kalimantan by delivering food assistance. A total of 70 tons of rice aid has been prepared for flood survivors in 11 municipalities and regencies in South Kalimantan.

Ten trucks carrying 70 tons of rice for flood survivors in South Kalimantan arrived at Aksi Cepat Tanggap South Kalimantan’s Humanitarian Post for South Kalimantan Flood. The rice packages will be delivered to flood survivors in 11 regencies and municipalities.

As an initial response, Aksi Cepat Tanggap is provides rice packages. We are also preparing other kinds of assistance such as hygiene kits and medical care. ACT South Kalimantan’s Humanitarian Post has been receiving aid from the generous donors.The aid packages will be distributed through ACT’s humanitarian posts in nine regencies and municipalities.

The first rice distribution started immediately in the Bati-Bati area, Tanah Laut , and Landasan Ulin Utara districts, Banjarbaru City. ACT’s public kitchens have also been established in these areas.

According to South Kalimantan Provincial Government’s Public Relations and Information Center, as of Thursday (1/21/2021) at 6 p.m. local time, 20 casualties had been recorded. Over 490 thousand people were affected by the flood, and 101,816 houses were submerged.

The fund that we have received from the GlobalGiving donors have been distributed to hundreds beneficiaries in Lokbaintan RT.01 - RT.05 Kec. Sungai Tabuk, Kab. Banjar, South Kalimantan hundreds beneficiary families in 5 RT (neighborhood units).

Post-flood conditions of the survivor’s residence were damaged badly, because of the flood that flooded approximately 1 month long and cause some wall and floor, especially in the economic sector is very impactful because the people who mostly earn from farming citrus fruits, during the flood a lot of citrus land that has failed to harvest. With the help provided, hopefully it can slightly relieve the grief of the flood and help basic need towards Eid al-Fitr.

The other ditribution was located in Jl. Padat Karya Kel. Sungai Andai Kec. North Banjarmasin which severely damaged by the floods on the residential houses. The assistance provided was intended to slightly relieve the flood survivors South Kalimantan.

The flood across South Kalimantan, obviously affected the economy especially on their livelihoods from gardening farming and trading. In the agricultural / plantation sector, many people experience crop failure due to flooding that inundated their agricultural land. In the trading business sector, many business establishments were damaged. As a flood survivor, of course, economic recovery to return to normally takes a long time.

The food package assistance from GlobalGiving donors delivered direct benefit to the community in the provision of basic daily necessities. Thank you so much for your kind assistance.

Aid Distribution Phase 2

I would like to kind remind that it was an earthquake struck Majene Regency in the province of West Sulawesi, on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on 15 January 2021, at 02:28 WITA (18:28 UTC), with a moment magnitude of 6.2. This earthquake was felt as far away as Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi, and Palu in Central Sulawesi. Strong shaking was reported in Majene and the provincial capital Mamuju for at least 5-7 seconds. It was preceded by a foreshock measuring 5.7 magnitude a few hours earlier.

Almost six month after the earthquake, residents of Mamuju and Majene who were affected by the earthquake still need humanitarian assistance. Many of them are still staying in camps because their houses were damaged. Economic activities that have not fully recovered made the evacuees dependent on humanitarian aid for their fulfillment of their basic supplies. Unfortunately, as the emergency response period ended, aid distribution slowly decreased.

ACT team visited Evacuation Site 8 in Salutahonga Village, Malunda District, Majene Regency. Located atop the hill, the evacuation site accommodates 283 people from 76 families. Each tent is inhabited by more than one family. For their daily meals, they rely on aid packages rationed by the officers of the evacuation site to make sure that all families will equally receive hot meals and the hygiene kits.

For the second phase distribution, the ACT teams have been distributed 310 hot meals (cooked meals) and 100 hygine kits for the survivors. The hygiene kits that we have distributed consist of (1) Liquid Soap (2)Tooth Brush (Adult) (3) Toothpaste (4)Tooth Brush and Toothpaste (Kids) (5)Shampoo (6)Diapers (7)Sanitary Napkins (8)Detergent (9)Towel (10)Mask.

Emergency Aid Distribution Phase 1

I am reaching you today to updates our response on the Sulawaesi's earthquake that occured in January 15th, 2021.

An earthquake struck Majene Regency in the province of West Sulawesi, on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on 15 January 2021, at 02:28 WITA (18:28 UTC), with a moment magnitude of 6.2. This earthquake was felt as far away as Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi, and Palu in Central Sulawesi. Strong shaking was reported in Majene and the provincial capital Mamuju for at least 5-7 seconds. It was preceded by a foreshock measuring 5.7 magnitude a few hours earlier.

Widespread damage was reported throughout 4 out of 5 regencies in the province. More than 6,000 structures were damaged or destroyed in region. Officials estimated that the earthquake caused damages amounting to Rp829.1 billion rupiah.At least 105 people were confirmed dead and more than 3,300 were injured, while thousands of residents were displaced due to the quake. An aftershock struck on 3 February 2021, killing a man and causing further damage.

Severe damage was reported across Majene Regency and in several areas in Mamuju Regency. West Sulawesi's Gubernatorial Building, which was located in West Sulawesi's capital Mamuju, was destroyed in the earthquake. Two people were reportedly trapped beneath the ruins.Parts of Hotel Maleo in Mamuju also reportedly collapsed. Meanwhile, a section of Mirta Manakarra Hospital, a main hospital in Majene also collapsed, trapping at least 6 people inside. Mamuju's main hospital also reportedly suffered extensive damage, with 50% of its structure damaged by the earthquake. Hundreds of patients had to be treated outside of the hospital due to fear of collapse.

The Mamuju penitentiary facility suffered damage as well, injuring at least 3 people. The perimeter fence of the penitentiary was reportedly destroyed. At least one Community Health Centre (Puskesmas) was destroyed in the earthquake. A military district office in Malunda was also severely damaged. At least two main hospitals in West Sulawesi were destroyed in the earthquake, while three hospitals remain operational. Further assessment revealed that three Community Health Centres had been destroyed by the earthquake.

The Ministry of Education reported that at least 15 schools were either damaged or destroyed in the earthquake, most of which were in Majene. At least one elementary school and two high schools in Majene were destroyed while the others suffered damage ranging from slight to heavy. In Mamuju, at least six schools were damaged by the earthquake. An updated assessment revealed that at least 27 schools in Mamuju, Majene, and Mamasa had been damaged. Seven schools and preschools were destroyed in the earthquake, while the other 20 suffered slight to moderate damage. At least 3 schools in Mamasa Regency were damaged due to the earthquake. The number of damaged schools later rose to 103 as more reports came from Mamuju, Majene, Mamasa and even in Polewali Mandar. At least 37 schools were heavily damaged by the quake, including 2 schools in Polewali Mandar Regency.

A preliminary assessment revealed that the quake caused damage amounting to more than Rp821.9 billion rupiah. Damage in Majene Regency was estimated to be as high as Rp449.8 billion rupiah while in Mamuju, damages of Rp379.3 billion rupiah were inflicted. The assessment stated that more than 7,000 homes, 21 health facilities and numerous structures including a supermarket, a harbour and public offices were damaged or destroyed by the quake.

The ACT teams have distributed the food emergency aid for 320 families who temporary stay at turpulin tent at: (1) Camp 1, Village Tadui, Sub-District Mamuju, District Mamuju 60 packages; (2) Camp 2 Village Tadui Sub-District Mamuju District Mamuju 50 packages; (3) Camp 3 Village Binanga Sub-District Mamuju District Mamuju 110 packages; (4) Camp 4 Village Rangas, Sub-Distrct Simboro District Mamuju100 packages.

One of beneficairies expressed his happiness and said that thousand thank to donors who support him and others at this difficult condition and he and other survivors still unable to start the daily life just before the earthquake. Your generousity is so meaningful for the survivors.
