As of March 2025, Indonesia's poverty rate was 8.74%, with 23.85 million people living below the national poverty line, a figure that has reached its lowest point since 1960. This represents a decrease from the previous year, with poverty rates declining across most regions except Maluku and Papua. Factors like the COVID-19 pandemic's impact, along with ongoing challenges in areas like access to quality education and job opportunities, continue to influence poverty levels.
Moreover, Indonesia frequently experiences a variety of natural disasters, including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and floods. The country's location on the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it prone to seismic and volcanic activity, while heavy rainfall often leads to floods and landslides. Notable historical events include the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora, both of which were among the most catastrophic in human history.
Recent natural disasters in Indonesia include a severe storm in Bali and West Java in December 2024, which caused landslides and tree collapses, and flooding in Bali in September 2025. The eruption of Mount Semeru in East Java also continues, with activity reported on November 13, 2025. These events add to a high frequency of disasters, with hydrometeorological events like floods and landslides dominating the total number, which exceeded 3,500 annually in recent years.
Furthermore, Indonesia experiences a high number of natural disasters, with the annual count often exceeding 3,500 events. Dominant disaster types: Floods, landslides, and extreme weather are the most common types of natural disasters in the country. Geological vulnerability: The country's location on major tectonic plates makes it highly susceptible to earthquakes, while its many volcanoes mean volcanic eruptions are also common.
