On July 28, 2026, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, registering the highest level on the Japanese seismic intensity scale (Shindo 7). Seismic activity is continuing, significantly impacting the safety and daily lives of residents. Ensuring access to medical care and maintaining hygienic conditions during evacuation is especially urgent for the elderly, children, and others requiring medical attention.
Immediately following the earthquake, Japan Heart dispatched an advance team to Kumamoto to assess the damage on the ground and will provide the support that is most needed based on the findings. Japan Heart has worked to strengthen collaboration with local governments on disaster medical relief in Kumamoto, and in March 2021 signed a cooperation agreement with the prefecture on support activities during large-scale disasters, which will guide our response this time.
Japan Heart will continue supporting affected residents in rebuilding their lives, including health, education, and support for people with disabilities. These efforts strengthen the community's resilience against future disasters and foster hope and security. Japan Heart will continue its activities in collaboration with local governments and other organizations, with a medium- to long-term perspective.
