There has been relative overall peace in the province following the Oct/Nov conflict, with sporadic clashes between armed forces in the territories.
Numerous attacks on the civil population have taken place in the territories of Rutshuru, Masisi and Walikale, as well as on some humanitarian outfits. For example, 16 such security incidents in the week of 17-24 February resulted in 34 fatalities, four kidnappings, 22 casualties and considerable population displacement.
Displacement still continues in the direction of Goma, at a rate of approximately 300 households/month.
Two camps have been added to the original five camps near Goma to accommodate new arrivals, bringing the total number of IDPs in the seven camps up to about 100,000.
New IDPs primarily from Rutshuru, Kiwanga, and now refugees from Ishasha on the DRC and Uganda border into Uganda affecting hundreds of thousands of women and children, particularly separated children, who are most at risk.
The needs of IDPs practically remains the same as was in previous weeks. Food remains chronically short in supply in the seven IDP camps; newly-arrived IDPs are still in urgent need of food, NFIs (specifically clothing, kitchen sets, firewood, and sanitary kits), and protection assistance.
