Restoring Healthcare One Step at a Time in Gaza

By Joe Samuel | Individual Giving Manager

In Gaza, over 1.8 million civilians face a dire shortage of healthcare when they need it the most. The ongoing conflict has left an estimated 80% of the region’s healthcare systems non-functional, exacerbating an already critical situation.

Partnering with Al Awda Health and Communities Association, an organization that operates health facilities and specializes in providing healthcare in Gaza, we are committed to restoring health services in the middle and northern areas of the Gaza Strip—one healthcare facility at a time. This partnership is not just about collaboration; it represents a shared commitment to building lasting change and fostering hope for the future of Gaza’s communities.

Relief International is supporting Al Awda’s facilities by supplying essential resources and expanding hospital capacity to manage the overwhelming number of patients and emergency cases.

This work is critical, as the situation across Gaza remains desperate. Hospitals are struggling with a relentless influx of patients, while heavy restrictions on supplies and limited movement into and within Gaza have led to shortages of fuel, food, water, and essential medical equipment. The ongoing conflict further complicates access to hospitals for both patients and staff. Just last weekend the only three partially functioning hospitals in Northern Gaza were targeted. Within just one hour, 70 patients were transported to Al-Awda's emergency unit. Close to 30 dead people were brought to the hospital

Despite these enormous barriers, Al Awda’s facilities continue to offer healthcare to Gazans, serving as a crucial lifeline for thousands of refugees—many of whom are women and children whose homes and communities have been devastated.

The dedication and resilience of our colleagues at Al Awda are nothing short of extraordinary.

“The hospital we are supporting in Northern Gaza is functioning with only 50% of the supplies it needs. Yet, the dedicated team continues to provide care without turning anyone away—a testament to the incredible work being done on the ground,” says Paul McQuinn, Relief International’s Regional Security and Access Director, who recently visited the healthcare facilities in Nuseirat and Jabalia.

As we look to the future, we remain dedicated to working with Al Awda to meet the healthcare needs of Gaza’s communities, ensuring that every individual has access to the care they deserve.

But we cannot do this alone.

Support from donors like you is crucial in helping us continue to provide life-saving healthcare and protection services to those who need it most. Thank you.
