Compared to other countries, Haiti has been lucky concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. The combination of restricted travel and lower than average rates of obesity and elderly populations have played significant roles in keeping the number of confirmed cases relatively low.
However, that luck may have run out. On May 22, Haiti President Jovenal Moise declared a state of emergency as the country experiences what officials believe may be a new, deadlier wave of COVID cases. Click here for more information.
This news makes the availability of emergency medicines and supplies for newborns all the more critical. Morality reviews conducted in the Justinien University Hospital pediatrics service show that the lack of emergency medicines and supplies are directly related to the deaths of newborns, especially those born moderately premature.
Konbit Sante supports the salary of a full-time assistant facilities manager who is tasked with monitoring inventory in pediatrics. When supplies of low, he alerts us and the hospital leadership so that the inventory can be quickly restocked before it is depleted completely. We purchase emergency medicines and supplies at low cost and partner with other nonprofit organizations to ensure they are delivered swiftly and efficiently.
