Emergency Flood Relief for Afghanistan

Afghanistan has faced severe flooding in several provinces, affecting families, homes, livelihoods, and local infrastructure. The situation has been especially difficult in remote and mountainous areas, where damaged roads and bridges have made it harder for affected communities to access basic services and for humanitarian teams to reach those in need.

In Nuristan Province, the floods caused serious loss of life and widespread damage. Based on the initial reports, 23 people have been confirmed dead, around 100–105 people are still missing, and more than 80 people have been injured. The floods also destroyed 7 houses completely, while 23 other houses were heavily damaged and are no longer safe for families to live in.

The damage was not limited to homes. Around 70 shops, 11 hotels, and 40 vehicles were completely or partially destroyed. The municipal building, telecommunications offices, bridges, agricultural land, and main roads were also damaged. These losses have affected both daily life and local livelihoods and have made the delivery of humanitarian assistance more difficult. Local authorities have estimated the financial damage at around USD 35–40 million. These figures are still preliminary, as search, rescue, and damage assessments are continuing in the affected areas.

Following the initial assessment, Aseel identified more than 100 families in Nuristan who were affected by the floods and needed immediate assistance. With the resources available at the time, Aseel provided 25 of the most vulnerable families with emergency relief packages.

Each package included: one family tent, blanket, carpet, flour, cooking oil, green tea, beans, salt

Each package cost USD 207.64, and the total value of the 25 packages was approximately USD 5,191. The tents were particularly important for families whose homes had been destroyed or had become unsafe to live in, giving them a temporary place to stay while they considered their next steps.

The situation in Logar Province was different but also caused serious difficulties for affected families. The floods damaged a large amount of agricultural land and resulted in financial and property losses for local households. Five families also suffered minor injuries.

To respond to the immediate food needs in Logar, Aseel provided food assistance to 20 affected families. The packages included flour, rice, chickpeas, beans, sugar, green tea, cooking oil, macaroni, Aash, tomato paste, cardamom, salt, yeast, Char Masala, and eggs. The assistance helped the families meet some of their basic food needs during the days following the floods.

So far, Aseel has directly supported 45 flood-affected families through the response in Nuristan and Logar. However, the needs are still much greater than the assistance provided so far.

In Nuristan, 105 additional families are still waiting for support. Many of these families have either completely lost their homes or are living in houses that have been severely damaged and are no longer safe.

Aseel plans to provide the same emergency relief package to these 105 families, including temporary shelter and essential food items. The total funding required for this assistance is USD 21,802.20.

With additional support, Aseel will be able to reach these families with the immediate assistance they need while they begin recovering from the floods. For families who have lost their homes and belongings, even basic shelter and food can make a significant difference during the first weeks of an emergency.
