In southeast Türkiye, at least 52,000 identified people died in the three earthquakes on February 6, and 20th thousands of buildings have entirely collapsed. After six months, most public hospitals are still damaged, and local public authorities have limited or no capacity to provide public services. In the region, international and local NGOs are still pursuing relief efforts.
DDD has been operational in the region, and as part of emergency response activities, it provided primary health care (including the provision of medications and sexual and reproductive health care), mental health and psychosocial support, protection, and case management support, as well as wash services to both Turkish Citizens and Syrian refugees through its safe space and 3 Medical Mobile Units.
The lack of sanitation facilities and hygiene items has resulted in individuals suffering from bites and mange, highlighting the urgent need for action, particularly for women and girls. Due to the lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation in many areas of Hatay, diseases such as scabies and louse can quickly arise. Therefore, DDD has made it one of its priorities to provide hygiene kits to earthquake-affected communities with comprehensive working modalities. DDD distributed around 2000 hygiene and maternity kits in the camp settlements, hard-to-reach villages, and its safe space to prevent the spread of communicable diseases, reduce the risk of other health problems and ensure continuous well-being in the region. The campaign contributed to purchasing hygiene and maternity kits to fill the gap.
