The project aims to contribute to the DDD earthquake relief efforts in Hatay/Antakya, in order to ensure the continuity of health, psychosocial support, medication, protection, water and basic sanitation (WASH) services provided by 3 Medical mobile teams and through safe spaces in Hatay province.
More than 52,000 people died on the night of February 6, 2023, at 4:17 a.m. local time, when a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkiye and Syria. This marks the most powerful earthquake recorded in Turkiye since 1939. The lack of access to basic needs such as sanitation facilities and hygiene items, along with the absence of adequate psychosocial support and health care services, has resulted in many individuals suffering from physical and mental health issues in the region.
Through 3 mobile teams and established safe spaces, DDD provides comprehensive physical and mental health support in Antakya. While mobile units provide services in hard-to-reach districts, DDD provides adequate sanitation facilities, hygiene items, and maternity kits to ensure the health and well-being of individuals in safe areas. Therefore, community members are more informed about the available rights and services, with improved health literacy and enhanced psychosocial capacity.
Through this project, community members will receive PHC, MHPSS services, protection services, and health promotion sessions on better-accessing government and non-government service providers. DDD's support will alleviate the impact of the disaster by strengthening the protection and resilience of the local community and refugee population in the longer term and maintain the sustainability of services for the transition to recovery in the region.
