Afghanistan faces a humanitarian crisis that is caused by change of regime after 46 years of war. It remains one of the world's most acute and complex humanitarian emergencies. The withdrawal of international forces, and cut offs from the supports by donors has exacerbated the situation, driven by escalating conflict and natural disasters. The level of vulnerability has increased. Families cannot afford even the basic needs due to increase in prices, unemployment, and closure of jobs.
Current conflict caused more internal displacement. UN warns of the worst famine and death of thousands over the winter due to food insecurity and cold. Access to food is difficult since the salaries have not been paid, prices have increased, many of previous governmental workers have lost their jobs, and more importantly women who were the only bread winners were banned from working. The people are at dire need of basic food and warmth for survival.
AfD maintains its services in Afghanistan and currently is active by providing health, nutrition, education, humanitarian support to the families in need. Our first priority are women headed families, families with children under 5 years old, families with disabled children/family member, elderly who are left alone due to death of their children and require immediate support. Through needs assessment the families will be identified and provided a coupon to receive their material.
This project would contribute to decrease deaths caused by malnutrition and cold weather. Low temperatures attribute to 14 % of the Low Respiratory Infections (LRIs: Bronchitis, Bronchiolitis and Pneumonia) among the population. Children are particularly vulnerable and are at higher risk of this type of infection. In 2019, in Afghanistan, LRIs were responsible for around 17% of the deaths in children <5 and 10% for children from 5 to 14 years old. This project would have immense impact on health
