The situation in Gaza is beyond catastrophic. Over 45,000 people have been killed, 15,000 of them are children and over 100,000 have been injured. It is estimated that over 10,000 people are missing under the rubble, 2 million people have been displaced (many, numerous times), and the population is being systematically denied access to food, water, fuel and medical care. Hunger and famine are claiming the lives of innocent children, while thousands of aid trucks are prevented from entering Gaza. A year after the fighting started, the situation in Gaza city and across northern Gaza is now worse than it has been at any stage in the last 12 months.
Thanks tothe generosity of our supporters, we have been able to send over £800,000 of emergency support to Gaza. This has provided food to thousands of hungry families, built new toilets to help prevent the spread of diseases, ensured vital medical care is available, given an essential income to young writers and delivered psychosocial support sessions to children and women.
Despite being bombed 4 times, the Al-Ahli ‘Baptist’ hospital is one of the few hospitals still operating in Gaza City. Their 60-bed hospital now has around 170 inpatients and carries out 25 -35 major emergency operations a day for those injured in the conflict They currently have 22,000 outpatients registered with them and receive around 700 outpatients a day. Everything is in such short supply - food, water, medicines and fuel and we have agreed to help the hospital purchase the essential fuel they need to keep running.
Over the next year, thanks to the generosity of our supporters and trusts we will fund DSPR (Department of Services to Palestinian Refugees) to deliver vital psychosocial support sessions to 12,000 women and children living in central Gaza and Gaza City, to help address their trauma and improve their mental health.
We will also continue to provide salaries to the young writers from We are Not Numbers as they document the war and share stories of everyday life in the most exceptional circumstances.
We will also continue to work with MAAN and the Welfare Association to provide food parcels and hot meals in Gaza City, and southern Gaza as well as shelter packs including sanitary products, blankets and coats as the winter sets in.
Thank you
I hope this update has shown the difference your funding has made to the lives of people in Gaza. As there is no end to the conflict in sight, we will continue supporting our partners in Gaza to deliver medical aid; vital meals, as the risk of starvation continues to increase; and improve people’s physical and mental health
