Thank you for your donations to our appeal for Gaza. Please find below an update of just some of the work we have been doing in the last few months.
Since our December update, we have continued to work with our partner Ajyal on distributions of clothing, blankets and food, responding rapidly when the opportunities arose. 1,473 blankets were distributed as part of our winterisation programme, as well as winter clothing packs for 500 people in Gaza City. This past winter has been particularly harsh in the Gaza Strip so these distributions have provided a vital lifeline. We also supported a hot meals programme during February supporting families with 1,315 hot meals for families during Ramadan, feeding over 5,000 people.
Our partner DSPR has continued to support children and women to process their trauma and cope with the acute stress of life in the Gaza Strip. In the last 6 months, they have supported 2013 children with therapeutic group play, and 306 children have received a series of one-to-one support sessions. Parents shared that these sessions helped to reduce children’s fear, sleep better and interact more openly with their friends and family.
912 women have also received group support from DSPR’s highly trained team, with 261 receiving more intensive one-to-one therapy. Women shared that they were more able to cope with their caregiving responsibilities, felt less alone and were able to connect with others.
Through two initiatives, we are supporting 3 tent schools and 2 temporary learning spaces (TLS) in Gaza City and Central Gaza. Two tent schools were established last year as a rapid locally-led response to the urgent need for education for primary age children, some of whom have never been to school and have now missed out on nearly 3 years of education, while a third tent school in Gaza City has just been opened.
Al Ahli hospital has been able to restart its essential women’s health clinics which we are delighted to be supporting. They have restarted their breast cancer screening programme, which we have partnered with them on for many years, in addition to bone density scans for women. Osteoporosis already disproportionately affects women. Added to the chronic malnutrition during the genocide leading to widespread vitamin D deficiencies, women in Gaza are even more at risk.
We Are Not Numbers continue to publish stories from young journalists in Gaza and are currently recruiting for a new cohort of young Gazan writers to join their training programme. They aim for two cohorts of over 40 writers in each cohort this year.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
